ILLEGAL LABOUR

Human trafficking: migrate to die

SUPANG CHANTAVANICH

Quote :-

Apart from the unusually high number, the tragic death of 54 migrants from Burma due to suffocation in an enclosed cold storage delivery truck heading for Phuket on Thursday April 10, was not new. Such incidents have happened in Thailand repeatedly.

Migrant workers from Laos, Cambodia and Burma have had to take the risk of being smuggled and trafficked into Thailand.

A 2004 study of cross-border migration and human trafficking along the Thai-Burmese border - conducted by the Asian Research Centre for Migration, Institute of Asian Studies at Chulalongkorn University, in collaboration with World Vision Thailand - indicated that approximately 12% of all cross-border migration cases were victims of human trafficking. The study made an estimation based on the level of exploitation migrants faced once they worked in Thailand. Ranong and Mae Sai (in Chiang Rai) crossing points were hot spots for such racketeers.

Yet another example of human rights abuses and are / have been happening continually on a regular basis for many years.

Yet again it is shame on the authorities who allow exploitation of them out of self interest and profit.

When will they introduce fair and humane laws to accomodateand protect what is obviously essential in relation to the much needed labour forces being used throughout Thailand.

marshbags :o indeed

P.S.

Incidently, let us not forget the trafficing that goes on in reverse with the exploitation of many of the poor and desperate Thai who are continually taken advantage of.

They borrow money to pay the unscrupulous so called respectable associations extortionate fees up front and constantly find themselves trapped as a consequence, some for many years due to debt obligations that have been placed on their families ect. ect.

Does the powers that be care about them ????

Sad that so many people are exploited in search of a better life. I doubt that the human condition is going to improve in the near future. High food costs, high energy costs and affects of climate change are going to make things more difficult for a lot of people.
