Us$500 Traveler's Cheques - Where To Exchange?

Featured Replies

Would any bank branch exchange US $500 or US $1,000 traveler's cheques? If not, which ones will do this? Just trying to not pay a lot of per cheque fees.

I need more cash sooner than I could take out of ATMs with the daily limit so that's not an option. It's for elective medical so I'd rather not wire it to the doctor and then try to get it back if I have to postpone the flight due to work or something. Plus I sent a deposit and the rate was so bad, the bank must have walked next door and exchanged it at a hotel.

Thanks.

I make two trips a year back to US. I always get 500 dollar travelers checks. I have no problem cashing them at any money changer or bank.

Any bank will cash them. Also there are a number of Amex offices in Thailand which will also cash.

Naka.

Unless things have changed in the last 10 years not every bank would change travelers checks. For Bangkok Bank only those with foreign exchange windows/sections were authorized to accept them. In Bangkok there are many Bangkok Bank branches, outside tourist areas, without these facilities.

I suspect the medical service would accept them also.

Thanks folks. That should save me 80% of those per cheque fees.

Yes, the doctor will accept them, as well as US currency, but I'd imagine about 1%-2% rate hit plus any per cheque fees.
