A Map Of The Worlds Main Internet Cables

Featured Replies

Could somebody please provide a link to a site showing where the worlds main internet cables are?

This would be useful for me, if I have a big download (ubuntu!) to do.

I would also like to know whether there is usually 1 or more than one main internet gateway into/out of a country. For example, in Thailand, does all international traffic come in/go out through a hub in Bangkok?

What about with other countries?

I "Googled" "Thailand Internet Map", this was the first hit...

You can do traceorutes to satisfy your curiosity.

This map is how CAT would like it to be, with all the international traffic going through their IIG (International Internet gateway)!

The following map is the real thing, up to date for April 2008:

To the OP, it'll be a bit of work to find out where to download from, every ISP has different ways to connect to the outside world, and will not always (maybe even seldom) choose the best routing to a certain destination. When doing a traceroute, I'm often completely flabbergasted to find out that I get routed all the way over the USA to a destination in Europe, while both the CAT gateway and the ISP's own international links have much shorter routes to Europe...

In short, the routing tables od the international gateways are very far from being optimized...
