We have a new teacher, he is on a tourist visa at the moment.

He has to go to Lao to get his B (teachers) visa.

Are the Thai embassies/consulates in Lao, still requiring these country of origin police background checks?

They required one from me last year, but as this is Thailand what is the situation now! :o

Also he is American how does he go about this?

Thanks in advance.

Pretty much all of our known information about police checks (which is not consistent in any way) is in the pinned thread on Police Checks. Good luck.

Thanks Ijustwannateach.

Took me 3 months to get mine from the UK.

Same time last year Savanaket were insisting on it.

You can get a police clearance from the Royal Thai Police Department. They will send off to your home country. I think you can check their web site.

Our teacher's have been required to have the police clearance at Laos.

Without starting a separate thread on it, it is now the 2nd of May. Public school starts in two weeks, and I suspect there will be many empty classrooms without TEFL teachers. Without some MEP, EP, and bilingual teachers, also. Between the usual procrastination and incompetency of the hiring officials, the embassies, the immigration and labour offices, you still have the police clearance checks and the TCT culture test.

Nobody's calling me for interviews, perhaps because I'm too old. I wonder if they will start calling on May 12.

When I came to Thailand I didn't know which police check was needed. Did I need a police check from my hometown, my home state or the FBI? I chose to get one from the state (Texas) online. It hasn't been questioned by three schools now.

Will pass that on to him as he is American.

Thanks to all who contributed.

PeaceBlondie you said.

You may find the schools have given up phoning, as those who remain here are booked up & the Thai directors have given up getting sorry no number for the rest. (lol)

But its early days PB I would be looking around the 9th & a call can you start Monday the 12th :o

I am an American. Same post as b4 but some grammar is corrected.

I had one some time back (police background check) and my state had two levels, I got the best possible which was more expensive I felt better safe than sorry asd I was going for work for an overseas employer.

This meant I was physically required to be there and gave electronic fingerprints and handscands of both R & L hands.

The I had to take everything to the Dept of State and they verified that the police backgound check was legit and that my degree qualifications were legit also, based on sealed transcript I hand carried to them issued to me by the university. Then everything went to the consulate of the country that here my new employer was based. Later eveything was forwarded to me and the documents were used to obtain a work permit.

With the US each state has it own procedure.

When I was working in Thailand I had a WP, just had to show my degree cert originals and no police check was required in order to get it.

When I went to all the trouble I had family to support and was going for a good job. Where I'm at now does not require the police check but they need transcripts shipped to them directly by the school and then my visa was issued in advance based on the evaluation of the qualifications.

I think every country is different but if you want to go for the good jobs and make decent money you best figure out how to jump through the hoops.

Alot of times the people reviewing the documents are just bureaucrats and they have to just see a paper in order to check off a box on form. You either have it or you don't.

Unless qualitative measures are legislated in like they were in my case why bother going the extra mile for small money job unless you anticipate needing this stuff in the future.
