I just read this article in a North eastern Sunday paper. http://www.sundaysun.co.uk/news/north-east-news/2008/04/27/student-drugged-and-left-crippled-79310-20827639/

A very poorly written article from somebody who has obviously never been to Koh Tao or Thailand. Having lived and worked on Tao for several years I have certainly never heard of this happening there. Lots of other nasties yes but not this. The expert who is treating him says his condition MAY be due to 1 whatever was given to him, of which no trace or residue has been identified. or 2 inhaling vomit. He was also evacuated to a hospital in Koh Samui on the mainland???.Last time I looked this morning it was still an island. One of the Thai partners of the dive school I worked for has a large clinic in Sairee. She has never treated anybody for being drugged but lots of farangs gettng very very drunk. Insurance also is not a factor for being treated there either. The only time insurance is required is for evacuation to either Chumphon or Koh Samui.

A tragic ending to a holiday but the way I read it is more to do with knowing when to stop drinking, and some people do not especially on holiday. It seems that the only time Thailand gets into the papers back home its all doom and gloom. It would be nice for a change to read some good news.

There is no mebtion in the article of a blood test to establish if he had drugs in his body. You would think that this is the first thing that they would do so as to treat the guy. Sounds a bit of an iffy story to me.

Cheers, Rick
