The Rains Are Coming....

I found this image while looking up lightning photography - how to capture this type of event? (Also thought it was good to share.)

Few active volcanoes in Thailand to practice on but you know what I mean.

That link does show a spectacular photograph.

Even without the volcanoes there are some good opportunities for lightning photos

in the wet season of Thailand.

Keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready. :o

I'm a brute force and ignorance shooter (of lightning).

Canon EOS D-60 with Canon EF 17-35 f4L @ 17mm, exposure 30s @ f10 & ISO 100

Try this for size.

  1. Camera on tripod pointing in a likely direction
  2. Shutter set to 30s (that's the slowest my D60 will go)
  3. ISO and aperture for about 3 stops under exposure (the lightning flash will illuminate the scene nicely)
  4. I have a remote release that locks, with it locked the camera just keeps on firing until the flashcard is full
  5. Crack a beer
  6. When the camera stops shooting replace the card
  7. Examine the contents for spectacular images

I also fix the white balance, street lights make the images too yellow.
