Banglamung Cable Tv Internet Service

Hi,

I'm watching Banglamung Cable TV and they are currently showing a commercial/advertisement for internet service. Has anyone tried it? What is the cost? How fast? ADSL or cable? Thanks.

Greg

I've seen the ad on BTV. Goes on for rather a long time and 99% in Thai language so difficult to extract any real information, for me at any rate.

I think that the service actually uses the same cable that you get your BTV television through. Probably not going to be as fast as 'proper' ADSL but will be faster than dial-up.

My worry with this is that if the service is provided with the same degree of professionalism as the cable TV service then it will be pretty useless. Maybe it's my location but it seems that quite often we get the blank screen for hours at a time as nothing is coming down the cable. The cable TV service is pretty dire really - do they actually monitor what they are putting out? I'm thinking of changing to Sophon!

Have you tried pressing the red button on the remote control? :D

Don't need to use the red button - my TV goes into sleep mode if it doesn't get a signal for ten minutes. Actually, BTV programming is so good :o that I often go into sleep mode too!

I've seen the ad again today - I gather, from the small English language content, that a download that previously took 2 hours on dial-up takes 20 minutes on the BTV service. A speedup factor of about 6x therefore, so not wonderful. I haven't gleaned anything about the cost of the service but there's a BTV office in Khaotalo so I might just pop across and see if they have any info. If I do get anything I'll report back.

It is not BTV that handles the internet part, they have started a different company to handle the internet side of business.

Info can be found here: http://www.supernet.co.th/

I must say that since they started advertising, speeds have deteriorated. I used to get around 1 mbps on a single stream, and the full 2 mbps using a download manager (8 simultaneous streams).

Which was OK for surfing, streaming video came in without buffering and downloads using the download manager came in rather fast (more like 40 times dial up, over 200 kBps).

I'm on the 2000 Baht/month 2 mbps package.

Now today I'm getting around 500 kbps single stream, and around 1000 - 1200 kbps using the download manager...

But since they source their internet with CAT, there might be problem there as well!

I too have a slow connection and live in the Banglamung area. I dont want another dish hanging off the roof, so have been waiting for another alternative to appear.

I dont have BTV, I have Sophon and UBC, so I am not sure about the BTV operation, athough there are plenty of sticky posters on the lamp posts around here.

A thread regarding BTV fast Internet was started here a few weeks ago and may be of some use, either now or in the future?:-

edit: just noticed monty has just posted some info here directly.

The running costs are still cheaper than Ipstar. Is it fairly reliable ie: I know the speed may vary, but does it crash a lot??

Fairly reliable.

It does crash sometimes, especially if some heavy thunderstorms are around.

If anywhere along the way between you and their office is a power cut, the whole thing comes down!

My brother-in-law spoke to the Banglamung TV office near our home and was quoted the following:

Installation: 1,000 Baht.

Modem: 6,000 Baht.

Monthly: 1,600 Baht for 2Mbp package.

They will be here on Wednesday to install.

That sounds to me like a reasonable deal.

Monty, you say its a reasonable service, the odd crash(quite normal stuff...).

If I kept the land line as well as a back up, then it sounds like the solution I have been waiting for.

Thanks guys for the info.

I cannot order it for a few weeks anyway, so if you could please post here what your experience is during the installation, I would very much appreciate it.

I just sent them an email to their advertised address and its changed:

[email protected]

I know I could phone them, but I find it easier to ask initial questions about availablity in my area etc... by email.

Does anyone have the new email address if there is one ???

Thanks for your help

The internet on BTV is run through the tv's fibreoptic cables so is capable of much faster speeds than adsl and the other alternatives on offer.

It is available for both BTV and Sophon TV subscribers - Internet on Sophon is managed by Bangkok Cable Net (BCN) with a new office opening on Pattaya Tai next week.

This new office has an Internet and gaming cafe downstairs so that you can try out the internet for yourself.

The whole network is currently undergoing complete renovations which will improve the quality of the service and solve most of the issues mentioned above.

As well as the hardware and infrastructure upgrades, BTV/BCN are now in partnership with a western management and marketing team (which Im part of) and we are currently working at improving the entrie service on offer.

As far as BTV television is concerned, expect major improvements over the upcoming months.

Channel 10 is in a changeover phase, now broadcasting as "Pattaya Life TV". This will be an English language channel aimed for the tourist and ex-pat community showing a range of shows from Pattaya, Krabi (where we broadcast Krabi Life TV) and from around the world.

A new specialist broadcast system is being installed for several of BTV's channels which will improve the content and information on display.

For more info on any of BTV, BCN or Pattaya Life TV's services contact Rob (Australian) on 0849 032 649 or Mem (Thai) on 0848 431 252.

I have just one question. When you say that you are "currently working at improving the entire service", does that include any licensing to carry American (NFL) football?

Very interesting, can you please enlighten us as to what speed these much faster speeds are ? I thought that BTV internet was a 2Mb/1Mb service ?

Also is it true that BTV internet cannot be used for P2P programs or BitTorrent programs due to the routers being not accesible to users so the necessary port forwarding to use these programs cannot be done ?

This is an old thread but I think worth an update. I just scheduled internet connection with BTV, cost is 1500 installation, 2500 modem, about 1550 monthly for 10 Mb line. This price includes TV service as well. the prices including installation were posted right on the table so Thai or farang is same price. I went to ToT and she told me 1600 to install and when i opened my wallet the price changed to 3800 to install. As far as quality of service and actual speeds, I don't know yet.

When I signed up for the service 4 years ago, the modem was free. Service was B 1990 month for 2 mbps connection and cable service was an extra charge. Over the years, the service has been upgraded and prices have declined so that currently, I pay B 990 month for 4 mbps and cable TV channels are included free :) All comes in over one coax-cable and split into 2 lines in the house (one to modem/computer and the other to TV).

Stop by their office and they have a print-out and free programming magazine.
