It's a wind up folks :o The OP cannot be serious if he thinks he can exist on 90 baht a day after paying for his board, and "wide of the mark" hasn't a clue either. Talking about cheap mobile phones, cheap scooters and an occasional beer. Big splash of the day...breakfast...30 baht what about lunch and dinner? What happens if he gets fed up with walking and should need a tuk-tuk...20 baht anywhere these days. OK a songtaew for maybe 10 baht if you are lucky, but there goes breakfast for the following day.

All this walking, and that's the only way to get around on 90 baht a day, will make you thirsty, so you need to keep your fluids up or pass out. Can of soft drink..20 baht..Whoops there goes my breakfast again for tomorrow. I could go on, but there seems little point... :D

The OP is not coming and rightly so and not because of the Chang Mai clan. Hes not coming because he cant afford it and knows it too well. Some people have forgotten that this man is a Tourist and not a retiree of which most are in there late 60s ,70s and 80s and at that age your mostly worried about a cup of tea and a nap and perhaps catching up with mates once a week so yes its Doable for them and sure beats the hel_l out of eating dog food back home on some measly pensions. As for people that live in Thailand permanently under 40yrs of age on $10 a day I have yet to see a happy one?? They all have that look of despair and that constant questioning of whether to go back home and work at McDonald's for not much more or stay here suffer and be free

You again? HA! Kicking back drinking some tea and getting in a few good naps doesn't sound that bad actually.

And if most the people over there have your attitude then I could do without the "mates" even less than once a week. It's plain to see that impressing others is your main objective in this forum and in your daily life from some of the things you've said. You have that need, fine, but making blanket statements about others just because of their age or income or whatever is pretty silly.

If you really need the attention that bad you have my permission to keep ripping on me, so then you can go down to the bar and brag about how you "toooootally maid this guy loook SO STUPID on the internets last niteeeee" to all your associates.

My plan was just to go somewhere interesting, take in what culture I can, and pursue some creative activities that I enjoy. I know it's hard to believe, but really my intentions are not to go there to get drunk everyday and bang 15 year old boys. Whether you believe this or not really has no meaning at this point to me as your opinion is invalid anymore. I'm just responding because I have a little bit of insomnia going on right now and the things you and a couple others come up with those low watt brains of yours makes me sleepy.

...Join the MONASTERY. that's solve the problem... :o:D

This is probably a joke, but that's not a bad idea.

I understand that is your way of striking back..

To cause anger..

A very dangerous and feeble attempt, for sure.

Keep it up when you get here, your problems won't be with the people on this forum I can assure you.

For most of the folks here who were attempting to assist you, you have since lost that now.

Oroboros,

Red your post and replys.

I’d like to have a bat for you.

“The Chiang Mai Clan”…………..

These “people” are a bunch of Big Headed , Big Mouthed, Know it all Jerks.

They were missfits in their own country, and they are a bunch of missfits in Thailand.

Nobody has got any respect for them least of all the Thai people.( Sorry boys…but this is an unarguable fact)

Walk past any Expat bar and you will see them in there. Back slappin and pud pullin and makein out they are sooo Thai. They make you sick and give all expats a bad name.

Check out the amount of posts these tools have been making. If YOU lived in Thailand and were soooo into Thailand , and Thai culture, and Thai people would you be in front of a computer going through forums like this every day looking for someone like you and me to kick at.

Of course you wouldn’t.

Your original post………

That budget is tight.

You would have to live in a rural village, which is a great experience.

The draw back is you need to be able to speak Thai. Because chances are nobody in the village will be able to speak English.

As one of the good guys said the cost of visas and visa runs will blow a big hole in your budget. You would have to keep away from the tourist areas including Chiang Mai.

Have you considered Cambodia?

$100 goes a lot further in Cambodia than Thailand.

It’s a beautiful country , people are great, and if your into photography you will never be bored.

Hasn’t got the infrastructure of Thailand but this gives the country a different feel

Medical services are basic, but at your age you probably don’t need daily medication like half the “clan” do.

Anyway, give one of them a go. Thing is if you don’t in ten or twenty years you will regret it.

Good luck mate.

PS Before “clan” members reply, take your medication and count to ten. Wouldn’t want one of you to pop a vessel.

Is that all of them, or just some? There are many, many different ex-pat communities in Chiang Mai alone.

They were missfits in their own country, and they are a bunch of missfits in Thailand.

You say 'misfit' as if it's a bad thing. If we 'fit' the 9-5 routine back on our home countries, we'd still be there instead of here.

Nobody has got any respect for them least of all the Thai people.( Sorry boys…but this is an unarguable fact)

Which survey are your quoting?

Walk past any Expat bar and you will see them in there. Back slappin and pud pullin and makein out they are sooo Thai. They make you sick and give all expats a bad name.

Sounds as if they won't let you in and you're upset about it. A little jealousy goes a long way.

If YOU lived in Thailand and were soooo into Thailand , and Thai culture, and Thai people would you be in front of a computer going through forums like this every day looking for someone like you and me to kick at.

Poor baby!! Have they been kicking at you? Been banned from the bars and clubs already, eh?

It’s a beautiful country , people are great, and if your into photography you will never be bored.

I can't think of many hobbies quite as expensive as photography.... Oops! There goes the budget!

PS Before “clan” members reply,

If you ask nicely, maybe they will let you in. :o

A few more figures. I live in a village 150 km away from Chiang Mai. I live together with my wife quite local. Biweekly we drive to Chiang Mai for shopping and errands and pleasure.

food, small items 9000 Baht/month

visa costs (incl travel BKK etc) 2000 Baht/month

accomodation 0 Baht/month: have our own house

car 1500 Baht/month gasoline only. Amortisation excluded here

medical insurance 5000 Baht/month

various incl donations 3000 Baht/month

trips, holidays 5000 Baht/month

Total 26500 Baht/month

This is for 2 people living cheaply. For one person this could be

food, small items 4500 Baht/month

visa costs (incl travel BKK etc) 2000 Baht/month

accomodation 0 Baht/month: have our own house

car 1500 Baht/month gasoline only. Amortisation excluded here

medical insurance 2500 Baht/month

various incl donations 1500 Baht/month

trips, holidays 2500 Baht/month

total 14500 Baht/month

Assume no car ==> 13,000 Baht/month

assume cheap medical insurance (-2000) 11,000 Baht/month

but accomodation costs (+2000) 13,000 Baht/month

some costs transport - gasoline motorbike 13,500 Baht/month

Allow for some initial costs. My initial costs were around 50,000 for kitchen equipment, furniture, bicycles etc. You will need this as well if you like a small motorbike.

So: 13,500 Baht seems ok = (13,500 Baht/31) = 435 USD/month plus 1430 USD initial costs

Notes:

1) I noticed in Chiang Mai things are a lot more expensive, so above village budget should be increased somewhat for Chiang Mai circumstances.

2) If you have a cheap insurance you need family to take care of you and in case of medical problems the insurance could not (fully)cover

I hope this helps a bit

Let's all sing now..

I'd like to teach the world to sing...in 3 part harmony..

I'd like the buy the world a coke, and keep it company..

It's the real thing, coke is..

Let's all again sing...

Up, up with people...meet 'em where ever we go...up, up with people,

it's the greatest show I know.

If more people were...

WHATEVER..

head to the 'Bode..you'll fit right in.

maybe you can have a happy pizza there and solve all the worlds problems and we won't have to put up with either of ya..

Take pictures, join hands..maybe you can change the world.

Call mommy when the credit card hits the limit, maybe she'll save ya.

And seeing as everyone in the clan is in such a happy, singing, hardened mood I thought I add my contribution:

Vicious

You hit me with a flower

You do it every hour

Ohh, GUITAR you're so vicious

Vicious

You want me to hit you with a stick

But all I've gots a guitar pick

Huh... GUITAR you're so vicious

When I watch you come

I just want to run far away

You're not the kind of person

Around whom I want to stay

When I see you comin down the street

I step on your hands and I mangle your feet

Youre not the kind of person that I wanna meet

Oh, GUITAR, you're so vicious

Vicious

You hit me with a flower

You do it every hour

Ohh, GUITAR you're so vicious

Vicious

Hey, why dont you swallow razor blades

You must think I'm some kinda gay blade

But GUITAR, you're so vicious

When I watch you comin'

I just have to run

You're not good and you certainly aren't very much fun

When I see you walkin' down the street

I step on your hand and I mangle your feet

You're not the kind of person that I even wanna meet

'cause you're so vicious

Vicious

Okay - I'm closing this flame fest.

There seems to be no true consensus on whether living on US$ 300-500 per month is possible. I personally think it would be very difficult to have an acceptable standard of living on that level of income - and impossible if you factor in the necessity of budgeting for emergency expenses, medical, legal or otherwise.

It is now up to the OP to make his own decision. Further discussion will be superfluous.

CLOSED.
