Workshop examines problems of Thais married to foreigners

Ariyawat Nuamsawat

A workshop was organized on May 10 for officials of the National Economic and Social Advisory Council to examine the problems facing Thai nationals who have foreign spouses.

Smiles abound from one of the many couples who attended the seminar.

Held at Pattaya City Hall, the workshop was led by Prawin Sujaritkul and Miss Porntip Preeyakanitpong.

Prawin said that the session was designed to examine feedback on the various problems that are encountered by Thais married to foreign nationals, so that officials can brief the government and thereby help to steer national policy.

There are problems and potential problems at all levels, said Prawin. These include finance and banking, schooling for the children, buying and management of property, possession of land, employment, dual nationality, divorce, custody of the children, and inheritance of property and land.

Thailand’s new constitution states that human dignity, rights, liberty, and equality of the people shall be protected. Women have the right to be protected by the State against unfair treatment. Government policy on foreign affairs stipulates that the State must protect and take care of the benefits of Thai citizens in foreign countries.

Ms Pornthip said that the National Economic and Social Advisory Council must follow the constitution and pass suggestions and proposals to the cabinet. Hence the need for the workshop, which was held to evaluate the results of interviews with Thais with foreign spouses conducted in Chiang Mai Province, Udon Thani Province, and Chonburi Province.

Pornthip said that further information was being compiled with the assistance of the Office of the Attorney General, the Department of Employment, the Consular Service, the Department of Consular Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Council of Women of Thailand, the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, and the Ministry of Labor.

The way I read the OP the seminar was not intended to focus exclusively on the negatives experienced by Thais married to foreigners but also on the problems of foreigners married to Thais in Thailand, which in a good marriage where problems are shared, also become the Thai partner's problems as well.

The issues raised in the OP were all very valid and I'd like to think that the Thai spouses would be just as concerned about the inequality which exists for their foreign spouses in Thailand regarding these issues as the foreign spouses are be they men or women. In my experience most Thais don't understand and don't agree why there are so many restrictions placed on their foreign spouses in Thailand compared to the rights Thais enjoy in their spouses' countries.

However, a positive outcome for foreign spouses is probably too much to hope for. Wouldn't be surprised if the government focuses only on the negative elements of foreign spouses raised at the seminar and makes it even harder for foreigners in Thailand, such is the increasing level of xenophobia in LOS.

realmadrid25, I trust your comment doesn't fully reflect the extent of your understanding of the issues involved here.

If an old guy is rich it doesn't matter if it is a developed or developing nation the birds flock to the cash.

Taking the report on face value - it seems that the study is concerned with the rights of "Thai Citizens" married to foreigners.

The constitution requires the government to take care of all it's people, even those who are living abroad.

I think this could be a good thing (it surely can't be a bad thing), as there may be a realisation that other countries treat foreign spouses more equally and with more respect than does Thailand.

For example, in the UK there is no longer an automatic UK passport for foreign spouses after 1 year of residence, but the foreign spouse is given "leave to remain in the country for an unlimited period'. No need to apply for a visa every 12 months or register as an alien every 90 days.

Wouldn't that be welcome here.

At least someone has now taken the trouble to talk to Thais and their foreign spouses.
