BANGKOK TAXI DRIVER LURED TO PATTAYA ROBBED, BEATEN UP, STRIPPED AND ABANDONED IN TAPIOCA

Two thieves lured a taxi driver from Bangkok, on May 27, 2008, to take them to Pattaya. When they arrived at their destination, the victim was knifed in the neck, beaten, tied up, and stripped before being dumped overnight in a tapioca plantation. The thieves then took all his money and finally stole his taxi. Fortunately, a Good Samaritan villager found the injured victim and took him to hospital.

The villager contacted Pol.Col.Sarayut Sa-gnuen-bpo-kai, Banglamung Superintendent, to inform him that he had found the unfortunate, seriously injured taxi driver in the tapioca plantation near a construction workers' camp in Soi Chaipornwithi 25., NIngprue. Police then sent investigative police and Sawang Boriboon rescue teams to the incident.

When police had arrived at the scene, they found an unconscious Mr. Rathakit Thamrongpradit (37), wearing only underwear, lying in the tapioca plantation. He had sustained wounds and bruises all over his body from being attacked with a hard object. Police tried to question Mr. Rathakit who was exhausted and eventually discovered that he worked for the Ruam-mit Co-operative Taxi Company in Bangkok.

Mr. Rathakit managed to tell police that at around 9pm on the previous night, he had been hired by two Thai guys from Bangna-Trad, Km. 4, Bangkok to come to Pattaya. Mr. Rathakit said that the two men were strangers. He initially drove round in circle in Pattaya, not being familiar with the area. At around 3am they arrived at the isolated incident location. The two men told him to stop the car. One of them got out of the car, saying that he would like to pick up a friend, then his companion, who was still in the car, pulled out a knife which he held at his neck and forced him to get out.

Immediately, he got out, the two men grabbed a piece of wood and beat him unconscious. They also stripped him, leaving him only in his underwear, tied him up and then threw him into the tapioca plantation. The thieves then took his money, approximately Bt2,000, and drove away in his red and orange Toyota Altis taxi. He was left there overnight until he was found by a villager who reported his find to the police.

Police took the seriously injured Mr.Rathakit to Banglamung Hospital for treatment. Mr. Rathakit also told police that his car had a GPS (global positioning system) installed, so it should not be too difficult to locate and track down the thieves.

Police searched the tapioca ranch and collected the piece of wood used as a weapon and took it away as evidence. Police will co-operate with the taxi com
