george Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 Blast outside Thailand bar injures 15 BANGKOK: -- A bomb exploded Thursday evening outside a bar in southern Thailand, the scene of a campaign of violence blamed on Islamic separatists, killing at least one person and injuring 15 people, police said. The explosive in the town of Sungai Kolok was left in a box in front of a beauty shop next to the bar by two men on a motorcycle and exploded as they drove off, police said. The blast came amid outrage among Thai Muslims over the deaths of 78 Muslims who suffocated, dehydrated or were crushed when hundreds of protesters were detained by police after a riot and packed into trucks for hours. Sungai Kolok is a town in Narathiwat province on the border with Malaysia. Narathiwat is one of three provinces in southern Thailand which have been hit by a surge of violence this year which officials attribute to Islamic separatists. More than 400 people have been killed since January in violent incidents in the region. No one claimed responsibility for the bombing and police did not immediately name any suspects. --AP 2004-10-28

REGGIE Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 Thursday October 28, 03:58 PM South Thailand bomb kills 1, injures 13 NARATHIWAT, Thailand (AFX) - A bomb killed one person and injured 13 in the mainly Muslim southern Thailand as anger mounted over the death of 85 protesters detained by the army. Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had earlier called a meeting with senior security advisers after separatists in the south warned of revenge attacks. He vowed to address the public about the crisis tomorrow after concluding an investigation. The bomb was placed in a plastic bag, thrown into a bar in the town of Sungai Kolok in Narathiwait province and triggered by a mobile phone, said defence ministry spokesman Major General Palangkoon Klaharn. An outlawed separatist group had vowed revenge for the death of the demonstrators earlier this week, which sparked condemnation at home and abroad. 'They will pay for what they have done, their cities will burn,' said a statement posted on the website of the Pattani United Liberation Organisation. On Monday, six protesters were shot dead in the chaotic demonstration outside Tak Bai police station in Narathiwat. Another 78 suffocated or were crushed to death after they were crammed into trucks for transport to an army base in neighbouring Pattani province. Another victim died of his injuries Wednesday.
stumonster Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 Bomb explodes at Thai barFrom correspondents in Bangkok, Thailand October 29, 2004 A BOMB exploded at an open-front bar in a southern Thai town overnight, killing at least two people and injuring 21, police said. Police identified one of the dead as Malaysian San Seik Kok, from Kota Bahru just over the border in the state of Kelantan. The other victim was a hostess from the bar whose name was not immediately available. Twenty-one people were hospitalised. Police said most of the victims were from Malaysia. Sungai Kolok, in Narathiwat province on the border with Malaysia, is known for prostitution and smuggling and is a popular destination for male tourists from across the border where the nightlife is much tamer. Narathiwat is one of three provinces in southern Thailand that have been hit by a surge of violence this year. Officials attribute the unrest that has left more than 400 people dead to Islamic separatists. The three provinces have Muslim majorities, while Thailand is about 90 per cent Buddhist. A man who helped send the injured to hospital said one of the victims told him that two men wearing black shirts and trousers arrived by motorcycle and one of them placed a box on a chair. According to the victim, he then shouted "Go away, this is a bomb", before speeding off on the motorcycle, said the rescuer, who insisted on anonymity. No one claimed responsibility for the bombing and police did not immediately name any suspects. http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/commo...55E1702,00.html How long before the recriminations from the violence reaches further north?
sriracha john Posted October 29, 2004 Posted October 29, 2004 How long before the recriminations from the violence reaches further north? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> AirAsia has daily flights to Bangkok from Hat Yai..... As mentioned in other thread: ** violence begets violence ** Also worth mentioning: In the morning a much bigger 10-kilogram home-made bomb was found and successfully defused in a separate incident in Narathiwat town. The bomb was in the form of a paper box containing ammonia nitrate and dynamite. The bomb was placed in a bag left at the stall by two young men on a motorcycle. The stall owner became suspicious about the abandoned bag and alerted the police, who managed to defuse the bomb inside just nine minutes before it was timed to explode -at 7.15am. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NINE minutes!!!
