Vista Sp1

Featured Replies

I have a HP Pavillion laptop with legit Vista installed. But winver shows Ver 6.0 (build 6000) with no SP1 mentioned. System reports all the auto-updates are up to date. So where is SP1 in all of this? Do I need it? Do I have it already? Not that I care much, as system is running well since I bought it Mar 2007.. just curious.

You can download from Microsoft Download Center the complete SP1. You can download from HERE at MS but keep in mind that the download has a size of 435 MByte

Cheers.

So shouldn't auto updates take care of this? Why would I need SP1 if Windows Vista says all my updates are downloaded? Thanks for any feedback.

Ok, if you've SP1 already, you should see it if you click on Start and than right click on Computer ->Properties in the upcoming window. If don't have it, it wouldn't be mentioned there and you need to install it if you want it. Even if Windows Update tells that all updates are done, that didn't means that you have the SP1 already. Inside of SP1 some udates which you didn't get with the "normal" updates, like the new Kernel which is the most important update of SP1.

If you download the whole SP1 it's a one time job only and you can keep it for future installations, don't need to download again.

Cheers.

Thanks. SP1 isn't listed on my Computer Properties, so I guess the SP1 is not an auto update.

I read somewhere that update to SP1 had been delay for some laptops due to compatibility problems with certain pieces of hardware. The fingerprint reader on my Fujitsu laptop was in the 'problem' list. If you haven't got SP1 by now odds are that you have some problem hardware too.

They said they were 'working on it with vendors' but it was still supposed to be solved by now. I don't have the link, but I got this information off a M$ site.

Edit: This isn't exactly what I read (which was about laptops) but:

Windows Update will recognize PCs with known problematic drivers and postpone downloading Windows Vista SP1 until the PC has updated drivers or other applicable updates. Using Windows Update will help ensure you have the most trouble-free update experience possible.

Microsoft

Another edit: See this page for possible causes and resolutions - especially No. 5.

Looks like I'll have to update my Bios, as it won't release SP1 to Fujitsu laptops unless their bios is newer version than March 2008!

I am thinking this is case with my HP also. Will just let the auto updates take care of themselves until the thing crashes on me I think. I have other things to do.
