Teaching Or Tutoring

Featured Replies

Hello.

I hope this is not just another useless post from myself.

Now then, after doing a bit of research at tv, I've noticed there doesn't half seem to be alot of TESOL banners on the website. Is there a reason for this? I'm a former adult literacies tutor from the UK, and I'm interested in pursuing this in Thailand if at all possible.

I'm pretty clear that teaching in schools is out of the window. But has the vocation been completely and utterly regulated in all areas such as the private sector schools for adults etc?

I'm about prepared to shell out for a TESOL, but I'm not one to waste my money. The sheer number of banners advertising TESOL in Thailand suggests to me that this is a spent gambit and I've missed the boat. Perhaps my only option is TESOL volunteering in a temple school! But if that was the case; as much as I'd like to volunteer my time, I have a family to consider.

I'll be honest, I'm not here to find a quick solution to stay in Thailand, I just about get by as it is. I'd like to start moving towards long-term residency and this is my number one career choice, as it's a skill I possess and it doesn't involve cheating people.

Anyway, can this be anything but a pipe dream without a graduate degree in education? After my little “Ahh” moment today, I've done a brief spot of research and the various companies out there promise the moon the stars, and the whole galaxy..... But they have sales targets don’t they?

Tutoring is one of my strengths, but is that enough in this day and age of Thai pseudo-internationalization?

Thanks for reading, gnite all!

Not counting the google ads, surely you noticed that two of the Teaching in Thailand forums are TESOL/TEFL schools? Have you read our incredibly long thread on Qualifications, pinned to the top of this forum?

Not meaning to be to critical to a newbie (welcome, etc.), but your opening post rambled a bit. Are you asking if you should take a TESOL/TEFL course, start your own, start a language school, etc.? What are your qualifications?

I have already been in contact this week with a TEFL school course provider who says they have never been so fully booked ahead. So the customers keep coming to teach in the Land of Similies.

My lady friend who tutors international school students can walk smack into a session with a 9 or 13 year old, and explain sexual and asexual reproduction at the drop of a pistil, and then compare Mayan pyramids to Sumerian ziggarats, and then check the binomial expression homework. It is not a gig for a hod carrier. She is still teaching kids in pajamas when other teachers are on their fifth beer. Her summers can bring in 30% of the monthly income, and you should see her fuel bill. Not for the fainthearted. And, until this week, she had never tutored a Thai national below the advanced level.
