A Show of Democrazy in Udonthani

Thailand has never been so divided as it now is before. It is difficult to believe that this could happen and in the region of the Northeast which is generally known for humble and polite culture. What have caused this? What does this kind of thing would lead to for Thailand?

Yesterday, June 27, 2008, A radio program promoter, Kwanchai Praipana, who was never a residence of Udonthani province, led a group called "Love Udon People" to confront Mr. Chareon Mukhachornphant the owner of a goldshop at the Baan Huay Market Rd., in Udonthani.

The LUP mob came with a pick up truck equipped with loud speakers, started their verbal attack with the lowest of the profanities against Mr. Chareon, who was known to be a core leader of PAD movement in Udonthani. The LUP led by this out-of-town radio man demanded that Chareon move out of Udonthani Province. Unless, they succeded in their demand, they will continue their gathering and attacking infront of Mr. Chareon's gold shop.

Upon hearing the news of the attack from ASTV, 500 members of PAD showed up to support Mr. Chareon and readied themselves for any eventualities.

Almost like the miniature picture of PAD's demonstration at Makkawan Bridge, the cops lined up in between the group to prevent and physical attack on each other.

What is happening in Thailand to get to things like this?

Why would an out of town radio man come to Udonthani to lead such an attack? Does he has great love for Udonthani and was protecting that province from some thing bad?

That's democrazy Thai style!"

Things are reaching boiling point even upcountry and it only seems to be a matter of time before one of these potential flashpoints goes beyond the sabre rattling so far. I would imagine that it does and has already at the individual, household and community level at quite a few places, but just hasn't been reported on by the media. I mean, Thais' only have a facade of jai yen in the main and when the critical point is reached, then the steam that has to be released is scary. The old social heirarchy checks and balances to public displays of anger and emotion seem to be crumbling fast, as Thaksin has polarised the country to a degree never seen before. Something has to give sooner or later. :o

Hiya Ray

I posted the following on the Security Tightens At Government House To Block Anti-govt Protesters, Siege in the making thread.

Wifes just come home from her monthly check up ect.at Udon hospital.

There was lots of trouble yesterday in Nong Prajak Park between rival supporters of The PAD and some of Thaksins lot.

Apparently the first group where having show of support for Chamlong, Sonti ect. and the paid for thugs started causing meyhem, sadly it ended in violence.

Thaksins local Puyia got wind of it and organised a similar thing in the town before diverting them to the park

The same is happening today and the Doctors at the hospital have been going back and forth to kep an eye on the situation.

They are, by the way, all in support of the PAD and are openly criticizing the governments lack of achievements over the last few months and the health related effects they are having.

My wifes heart specialist in particular is very angry as he deals with the hardship of patients who as a consequence are suffering related health problems caused by the additional stress.

Of course this view on the reality of what has and still is taking place is sadly missed by the supporters of Thaksin, why ???, is beyond me as they live among these people, many of whom, must be related in some way.

A few baht has an amazing effect on these uncaring B*S*A*DS !!!!!

Mind you they have some right role masters at the top level so what else can you expect from the no brainers.

marshbags :o and still :D

Reckon they could be related / connected.

Wifes observations via the hospital started on the 26th so continuity looks a good bet on this.

The Moo Ban incidently said it was at the rear of the park on the fair ground ( Chinese temple area ) where it all started.

As you say " Democrazy Thai style " ( make that Non ), but try getting that across to these people and fellow Thaksin supporters.

marshbags :D

Actually the write up was from The Nation in bloq section not mine.

As I said there was more then one yesterday the write up was an incident that occured at the Bon Hoi market not the park.

If this becomes widespread and to imagine it has, I doubt seriously if Udon was the only place in Issan that this happened. It is going to be much harder for the cops to keep the groups apart. The end result of that will be violence.

Only doing it for the money. Follow the money trail & you'll find the real antagonists.

Some would say that the money lies with the old Chinese Thai elite, who, in an era of surface democracy, run into a problem of demographics, namely that their political proxies are likely to lose free elections because they will be outvoted by the rural poor. This power block then creates an alliance for democracy that will not accept election results.

The old Chinese families seem to have done pretty well from democracy so far. Thaskin is Chinese as are the owners of CP Corporation, one of his biggest backers. Issangeorge.

Well, I would draw a distinction between the 'old money', and the 'nouveau riche', as represented by Thaksin, who have developed a distinctive populist agenda to win power away from the more traditional group. This seems to be the fault line between the two main interest blocks

He wasn't talking about Thailand specifically, but Leonard Cohen knew a thing or two about conflict, love and man's condition when he penned this song:

There is a war between the rich and poor,

a war between the man and the woman.

There is a war between the ones who say there is a war

and the ones who say there isn't.

Why don't you come on back to the war, that's right, get in it,

why don't you come on back to the war, it's just beginning.

Well I live here with a woman and a child,

the situation makes me kind of nervous.

Yes, I rise up from her arms, she says "I guess you call this love";

I call it service.

Why don't you come on back to the war, don't be a tourist,

why don't you come on back to the war, before it hurts us,

why don't you come on back to the war, let's all get nervous.

You cannot stand what I've become,

you much prefer the gentleman I was before.

I was so easy to defeat, I was so easy to control,

I didn't even know there was a war.

Why don't you come on back to the war, don't be embarrassed,

why don't you come on back to the war, you can still get married.

There is a war between the rich and poor,

a war between the man and the woman.

There is a war between the left and right,

a war between the black and white,

a war between the odd and the even.

Why don't you come on back to the war, pick up your tiny burden,

why don't you come on back to the war, let's all get even,

why don't you come on back to the war, can't you hear me speaking?

I really can't stand Leonard Cohen, a toneless wonder .... as in I wonder how he got signed..... music to slay sheep by.

Ahhh... now I get the political reference.

Glastonbury Festival has just finished and this 74 (?) year old "toneless wonder" was one of the great stars on stage for the crowd mostly in their 20's/30's. He's just on a world tour and packs out every concert venue he plays in. Leonard Cohen is one of the greatest lyricists ever and has influenced the music of countless bands. He's a living legend. :o

So you must be either too old or too young to appreciate recognised brilliance. :D Still music is subjective and you're welcome to your tastes, whatever they maybe. But I ask you, who else could pen lyrics like:

"Give me crack and anal sex,

Take the only tree that's left,

and stuff it up the hole in your culture.

Give me back the Berlin Wall,

Give me Stalin and St Paul

I've seen the future brother,

It is murder."

The Future.

But if this is too much like "slaying sheep" for you, go lift your spirits with Closing Time off the same album (THE FUTURE). Guaranteed to get you danciing on the polka dots with Johnny Walker wisdom. :D

The shadow of Thaksin still haunts the country and will keep doing so until he gets convicted. The problem is that he never will be convicted. No matter how blatant the crime. To convict one of the elite, you would have to convict all of them. They´re all in on it. Plundering the country. Bastards!
