Hi, I am a 48 year old artist with who holds a BFA, I have been living in the LOS for a year and a half. I have 25 years of exhibition history (some of it international). I also went to school in Buffalo New York for my MFA but after 2 and a half years (I was a dual painting/sculpture major) I finished but never applied for my degree. The plan at the time was to move to NYC (which I did for 13 years) and go to a name school (which I never could afford to do). When I was in NYC and before I had many students who would take a painting class in my studio. I also was an art teacher at a catholic school for 2 and a half years and when I was a grad student I taught four undergraduate courses.

In Thailand, I taught 3-5 year olds at a decent school last year (Math and Science) and I also taught English for a year in Korea before I came here. I love teaching and like teaching English but it is not my talent and I would like teaching art better.

I have also started and run two art galleries one which was a not for profit gallery and still exists today in Buffalo and another which was a for profit gallery in NYC. My total experience with this was 3 years at the not for profit and a year and a half at the for profit. I am not a famous artist but have had some successes and have work collected by Museums and many collectors and been shown internationally. I first went to Korea as an artist in a studio residency for 3 months.

I have also been an assistant to a few more or less famous artists in NYC i.e. Dennis Oppenhiem. I also worked at some galleries and museums doing installation work when they had shows and shipping and handling art. I drove a truck for an art moving co. for a couple of years and handled and installed art in many rich and famous homes, galleries and auction houses.

So, I am looking for a new job. I would love to teach Art at the University level but am willing to do it at any level. I also have many other experiences and can teach other things, one example, I spent a couple of years designing and building motorized exercise machines. I was a car and truck mechanic for 8 years. etc..... I love science related things and read about it a lot. I have a little computer skill and some basic photography skills as well. My hobby since I have been in Thailand has been 50cc scooters.

Any and all advice or better yet, connections would be greatly appreciated. I know my timing for looking for University work is off but that would be ideal.

I would certainly be a better art teacher than English teacher.

BTW thanks in advance

also I post the same post on Ajarn.com in the newbie zone and added this to it in reply to a post there

Bachelor of Fine Arts is right, and yes I was very close to having my Masters (I didn't apply for it and was 3 credits short because of a disputed grade in an art history class, I got C which meant that I didn't get credit for the course) in 1991 at the time I thought I was better off not getting it. Did you know that after 5 years most schools will not transfer credits (I didn't know that until years after I finished).

I am redoing my folio with things I have made whilst in Thailand and here is a link to an old blog I was doing while in Seoul.

http://downwardsspiral.blogspot.com

The website mentioned on that site doesn't work anymore. And that site takes a boatload of time to load in Thailand, I am sorry in advance about that. In Korea it was good, any recommendation on a better host would be great as well.

One problem I am having is my stupid Samsung camera hasn't really worked almost the entire time I have been here and I have taken it to the Samsung service center 4 times, they keep cleaning it and works for a day or two and then it won't recharge. The last two times they also said they "adjusted it" whatever that means. I plan on buying a new one but I spent like 400$ on it just a couple of years ago and it is a nice camera when it works. Does anyone know if there is a slightly different voltage here or some senseable reason why this happens? Or a good place to fix electronics? It doesn't need a new battery or charging cord either as both of those things were done before I took it to get repaired.

Thanks again

Peace

^^ By some margin, the best university for Art/Art and design in Thailand is Silpakorn Uni. Have a wander down to the Na Phra Larn campus opposite the Grand Palace and look at the displays/exhibitions there - pretty good. There are certainly opportunities for English teaching at Silpakorn (quaintly enough, within the Faculty of Archaeology) and the university itself was established by an Italian artist with Thai citizenship, the chap who designed the Democracy Monument and Victory Monument (amongst others). There have been visiting foreign art lecturers there in the past, but I don't know of any current vacancies and suspect if they were prepared to take on a foreigner he/she would need a masters or preferably a doctorate in Art. However, no harm in asking!

Thanks paully, doctorates in fine arts is a relatively new thing, the first I heard of it was within the last ten years.

Actually I was thinking for a little while of getting my MFA there, but they won't give me any credits for my experiences (according to the woman I talked to in the admissions office). I don't have enough money to spend 2 years going to school either (I need a paycheck next month, as a matter of fact). I also don't know if I was to go back to the states if it would have any value what so ever, but maybe it would. I have been compiling a list of artists who work there and at other unies that I plan on contacting with a web address of my work (for them to look at) and asking advice from them. I have visited the galleries there but think I need a better introduction than just walking in and saying Hi. I really don't know how I would do that comfortably (for them or me) either really. Hopefully, I will get some responses to my efforts.

The position for an art teacher has opened in Mahasarakham, this is an extremely good chance to live in a beautiful town and a great school, it is in an English program so the students can communicate very well, the requirements are a native English speaker, with a BA and Tefl certificate, also the Thai cultural course certificate would be beneficial but not compulsory.
