The Herb Sage

Featured Replies

Dear Forum,

I am trying to locate the herb sage or the Thai equivalent. If you know the Thai name for sage please write in script as well as transliteration. If you can direct me to a photo even better.

Thanks for your help - posted in food forum as well.

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best

The herb sage isn't native to Thailand, and as far as I know isn't used in Thai cooking.

Therefore in the Thai language there isn't a Thai name for sage (I can't find it in any of my dictionaries). I found some examples of the Thai transcription of "sage" on the net เซจ.

Here's a link to wikipedia. With some information and pictures of sage.

I have before me a small bottle of McCormick brand ground sage which I bought at Home Fresh Mart at The Mall. The Thai label just says: ใบเสจป่น, which is 'powdered sage leaves', using the English word "sage" transcribed into Thai: เสจ.

In Chiang Mai at Rimping they sell dried sage and also have fresh herbs in the fruit & veg displays. A big bag of fresh parsley for 15 baht! and Rosemary for 20 baht!...the parsley bag has the 'royal' symbol on it so is perhaps one of the royal sponsored projects

For those interested here's a link to a previous discussion on the topic:

I can usually find fresh sage in Supermarket in KPG, togeter with italian basil, parsley, rosemary, tyme. Easy to find in BKK too.

I have, if you want, a little bit of sage's seeds, but I still didn't try to plant.

Dear Forum,

Thanks for this.

The previous thread showed sage as a transliteration (เซจ), and เสียง เอก ค่ะ?

I am looking for sage not as a herb in cooking but for using as tea to help with bad throats. Any local herbs that are equivalent?

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best
