Microsoft have announced that they will cease to provide Windows 3.11 as of 1st November 2008.

Go on you think I'm joking don't you, be honest. well, 3.11 has been provided as an Embedded System for years, but will cease. Now this I guess could really be called an end of an era.

Embedded system? I thought Win 3.11 required a frame buffer, which isn't present on a majority of embedded systems.

I often wondered why a lot of these old programs and hardware were still around until recently. There’s specialized engineering equipment still using it.

I recently had a request to find a computer with a 5 ¼ inch floppy drive and OS. They needed to update the software and the only way they could do it without modifying the equipment was by using that sized disk and OS.

MS was still supporting WfW 3.11 in the UK until sometime around 1999/2000 for at least one customer. It may still be. It might support XP for another 10-20 years. Maybe more, maybe less.

Of course, that's the difference between free and paid for support.
