Helping Out In Places..?

Im wondering if there is such a thing as being able to go along someplace and help out..er..if you get what i mean. I mean, for example, days where organisations/charities etc may need a helping hand. Maybe a special project day where extra hands would be welcome...?

At this point i cannot commit to helping out on a regular basis, so I would just like to know if anyone has an idea of who would be willing to accept a "drop in" helper. Or if any events are coming up where a charity would appreciate a volunteer or two.

I am open to helping out with animals and/or people/children. Really just want to do something constructive when i have free time and of course the selfish part is I enjoy the feeling I get if I can help out places from time to time .

Nice, sunrise. Problem is, still no suggestions Of course I can do my own hunting around, but its always easier if someone can point in the right direction. But anyway, if i find some places myself, i will post where for others who may be interested.

I think helping others is great, too, but a buddhist monk might tell you something for you to think about.

I would recommend you to join with a club for example Rotary Chiang Mai North Club. They have several projects to help children all around the year. We have meeting every Wednesday at Chiang Mai Orchid Hotel from 19.30 h. I am one of a member of this club.

Isn't a work permit required for volunteer work? I have just been asked to assist a group, and would love to do so; but am wary of doing so without the permit. I recall the anxious concern regarding foreign aid workers at the Tsunami sites. Just a thought.

Sadly Im aware of that official rule regarding a work permit restriction/requirement for volunteer work ataloss, but I dont see why we cant 'help out' on a non-regular basis. I personally think the Thai authorities wouldnt really want to clamp down on foreigners lending an occasional helping hand to places, otherwise they would be actively stamping down on the foreigners who are teaching English on a tourist visa. I guess just keep a low key.

Tnx for the suggest opjade. Rotary clubs arent really for me though. Ive found out a low income school where a friend is working that could use some extra support, and have read about different orphanages around town that invite people along from outside to help too, so CM doesnt seem to be too short of places willing to accept non-regular volunteering.

I took the liberty of deleting a charity appeal because generally, ThaiVisa would be flooded with hundred of such pleas.

I spent much of my life doing volunteer work, in three countries, some of it illegally, including in Thailand. I almost came to Thailand originally to help save a certain Hill Tribe from the Asians and the Christian missionaries, and I very well might have gotten deported for doing so. This year I have concluded that the Thais generally, and the Thai government for sure, does not want farangs to interfere with this glorious Kingdom. Let the Thais fix Thailand; at least they know the language and culture.

But if you have too much time on your hands, and your Higher Power compels you to save the world, go right ahead.

Peace Blondie - I take it that you are referring to my post raising awareness of activities available for volunteers at carefordogs as well as notification of an event upcoming in Chiang Mai, also attaching .jpg if people wanted to assist by distributing that poster in their area. I subsequently posted again to apologise if any content offended the rules of this forum.

I have always remained polite about all I do & expect others to do unto me as I do to them.

Allyt, usually when a post violates forum policy, I delete the entire post. It appeared to me that both your posts did so. This was discussed by several moderators and confirmed by one or two administrators. Besides, my hand coordination is so poor it would take me forever to cut out portiojns and leave the rest. I apologize if I overlooked sonething vital.

I will not breach another forum rule here, by discussing forum policy itself but I would suggest the rules be amended to preclude events such as this occurring again.

A volunteer group helping animals is not about making profit but about animal welfare. Its about dealing with real life issues and helping animals in danger on the streets and temples, in the area where most of the readers of this particular forum reside - Chiang Mai.

I am saddened to think that you are personally responsible for speaking poorly about the community you live within. Something that I would never dream about doing, as not only I am fortunate enough to be a guest within this wonderful country but I am very concise of the audience reading these posts.

You are very lucky to be allowed to post such words that do constitute violation of 'forum rules'.

In answer to the original post, I feel certain that Chiang Mai would offer a variety of short term volunteer opportunities for people who want to help either people or animals.

I am acutely aware of some wonderful individuals that give their time to helping out at Care for Dogs. One particular lady for instance, who is only staying in Thailand a short while, spends at least 4 days a week (5 hours or so) just sitting with the dogs at the care for dogs shelter giving them socialisation, showers and good old fashioned love. Such a kind hearted lady.

If you do find any other short term volunteer activities and of peoples experiences of helping people or animals in need, please let me know either here or directly, so that I can pass the information on to others that may ask me.
