Having no idea what 'sambal oelek' was, I had to Google it. Not only did I find out what it was on the first page, but also links to many recipes to make it yourself and several on-line retailers - including Amazon!

I buy sambal badjak and sambal brandal at an online shop in Holland.

I used to buy locally "prit ta deng" which comes a little near to the taste of the badjak but it isn't the same.

I know it is expensive but why should't I ?

btw that shop also sells the sambal oelek.

Can pm you if you like but I think you will know already.

Thats because its like looking for a tree among the leaves - all sambal oelek is is blended red chillis, vinegar and salt.

Either ask for a premade Thai substitute or make your own - 80g fresh red chillis, a bit of white vinegar or lime juice and 1 teaspoon salt. Remove the seeds if you don't want it too hot, chop the chillis smaller then put all ingredients in a blender and blend together as smooth as you want it. Keep in a jar the fridge.

The most basic concoction is just pounded chillis and salt. Other variations get fancier adding the souring agent and blachan etc. Kees5's wife.

Good thing I know it's not a joke...I know sambal oelek...I am sure i spelled it wrong.

I never say Dude...usually.

You are in Thailand....Why in the world do you need that particular brand?

The Chilly in thailand is not hot enough for you?

Why <deleted> sambal....?

Sorry but sometimes I just don't understand people..

It has to be called sambal....

I come here once in a while....sorry this is beyond me

eat a chilly...if you miss your Mom write her a letter

on the lighter side of things....drink a little more water and less mekong

Thanks for setting me straight jingthing

...yet why not make it yourself?

It isn't that hard...and if it is as you say about the taste....hey..your own is the best.

It takes you as long to make it as it takes most to register for Thaivisa.com

At least you now it will be sambal jingthing

Just a thought

A friend of mine asks everyone tavelling from Germany to bring some cans along....says it all!

Actually amazing that this Indonesian spice is not available in Thailand and has to be brought back from Europe!

if you mean what we call in Germany "frikadellen"... Friendship in Pattaya sells them, Otto in Bangkok produces them.

note: they are bland, no trace of any spice (not even salt) and besides that they don't taste as hardly any bread crumbs in the mix :o

Found out saturday: a small, good restaurant at Nern Plub Waan Plaza "Andrea's Bar" (former TiJa Bar) has frikandellen on the menu!
