Getting A New Bird In Pattaya.

I know the subject line may be open for a lot of pisstakes but it is the feathered kind I am referring to. :o

Has anyone bought from Mini's Aviary Exotic pets near Excite Disco? I want to buy a Yellow-headed Amazon Parrot but don't want a dead duck so to speak. I will suggest a trip to the vet for a quick MOT and if the bird checks out will then purchase on that basis.

Would be interested to know if anyone has any experience with the above mentioned shop.

Exotic birds can be pretty delicate creatures and expensive (the feathered ones too). I know the shop to which you refer but have no specific info on their stock specifically. In general, I would maybe put down a small option to purchase a specific bird, and let them keep it for a month or two. If it's still alive at the end of that time, okay...buy it. On the other hand, offer to pay half...and the balance after a month or so (while you have the bird at home). If they have confidence in the health of their stock, they should not have a problem with such an arrangement.

Chopper, Jatuchak has a pretty good selection of parrots in the newer section. There is about 15-20 breeders and whilst some are clearly a little dodgy, there are 3 or 4 that are exceptionally clean and have excellent birds at various ages, from chicks that are still on eye dropper feedings to more mature birds.

You can pretty much buy any bird from Macaws and Amazons, to any Australian parrot.

There are also a few stores that specialise in cages and they have some really good large cages on wheels, as well as all the accesories, toys, and feed.

I think its worth the trip up the check out what they have. You will easily spend a few hours there looking at the birds and talking to breeders.

Don't mistake the Pet section in the older Jatuchak (near homewares) for the bird section. That's just nasty.

Thanks NotNew2You, that seems a sensible option. They have many birds in there such as Macau's that are from a few weeks old and they are being weaned onto their own food and taken care of for a few months until the assessment of the shop is that they are ready to be sold. Many of those have had deposits put down on them.

The particular bird I am interested in is less noisy than a Macau not as shrill, however it is very talkative, a fast learner and very intelligent: some would venture to suggest like its potential owner. :o

It is two and a half months old now and ready to be taken out of the shop. I will test their reaction to a veterinary check. Since it will be at my expense there is no downside for them and a refusal might raise the question as to why? Putting a deposit down and leaving it in the shop for an extra month or two would be a good idea also.

I bought a young Mynah Bird from a shop on Soi Nernplubwan, called him Leo, he is a propper chatterbox now, the life and soul of any party!!! Leo shouts very loud at people walking past in Thai and English. If I was intending to go for a more expensive bird, I think I would go to Bangkok.

DLock, Thanks I will take a trip down there this weekend time permitting and make a comparison. You are quite right about the cages. I have been Googling like a nutter the last few days on all things bird related! Not that I look like a nutter of course.

They offer a complete service - for only an extra 50 Baht they provide a little bag tied to the leg containing some lemon grass, chilli and holy basil which makes a lovely Yellow Headed Parrot Pot Roast, I'm told.

could anyone tell me what a rough price of a Macaw would be..or even an African Grey.?

Cheers :o

Froggs

Froggshw, When I was last there, Macaws ranged from about 25,000 baht - 35,000 baht depending on age (older more expensive) and this was for Blue/Golds. As you get into the rarer Macaws the price can go up dramatically.

African Greys were around 20,000 - 25,000, but I did see some a little cheaper, but I was not impressed with the store of staff.

Jaansinatra is so right. These birds can be VERY noisy and do need a lot of human interaction to keep them entertained and sane.

A Grey or smaller Amazon is a good compromise in my opinion - not too big, great talker, not too noisy, easy to take care.

In the same section the have exotic reptiles - you can buy or order any type of snake. They even had a massive king cobra for sale as well as baby crocodiles. And in the salt water acquariums, they had black tipped sharks and almost any fish you can think off. Amazing.

LOL. I thought the subject line would draw attention to this thread somehow. :D

Cuban, I am sure that the Parrot would make a lovely Pot Roast for you. Pot luck if you can catch it though. :D

DLock, thanks for the feedback, though what was it that did not impress you about the store or staff?

I found Bob the owner to be extremely knowledgeable and helpful. They will offer a 72 hour period where you can get the bird checked thoroughly by a Avian Vet and if you are not satisfied in any way they will let you return the bird to the store and get a full refund.

remember that birds can be loud yappers and can disturb your sleep patterns. maybe the birds yapping will annoy your neighbors. personally i would prefer people left birds in the wild. have you considered adopting a soi dog instead?

My Mynah Bird goes to sleep at about 7pm and starts his yapping at around 7am, which is not so bad, i think we are all use to him now, my neighbors love him, he is quite a character. We had a huge cage made especialy for him outside, as we also have quite a few Cats, my Cats do not bother him at all, quite the opposite, he would eat them alive if they tried to get near him.

Chopper, Don't waste your time in Pattaya, Jatujak is the place to go if you're looking for a parrot. I bought an African Grey just a little under a year ago at Jatujak in Bangkok. He was just a few months old and I paid around 10,000 baht for him. I had no problems at all, The lady in the shop was extremely friendly and helpful. My african grey is sat next to me right now chattering away. I have quite a few cats so the first thing he learnt was to meow! And then he learnt to call his own name.. Ha ha ha.. His vocabulary is growing fast.

My bird is not too noisy, however, if you are going to let your bird in your house on a bird stand throughout the day, be prepared for the mess!!! I can't stand having a dirty floor, however my parrot 'MK' makes it impossible to have a clean floor.

I think I still have the card somewhere for the place where I bought MK. If you would like me to PM you the info, just let me know.

Good luck!! :o

I was quoted 25,000 baht for an 8 month old African Grey at Mini's aviary on 3rd road. The bird wouldn't let you touch its head, the other one for sale at (I think) 23,000 hadn't learnt to stand on the shoulder, That one was around a year and a half.

I bought my parrot for 10,000 and he was around half the age. Since we brought him up, he lets us do anything to him..

He especially likes us to stroke his head backwards...... He nibbles our fingers if we stop, wanting more.....Hes such a cutie! Very happy with him :o

Does anyone know of a good vet in Pattaya for birds???

pattaya_girl, again thanks for your advice. I am looking forward to teaching my new acquisition a few choice acerbic barbs! It is good to know that they are bi lingual. :o

Chopper, actualy my Leo has three languages, English, Thai and Islamic. I have been told he has a good vocabulary for a Mynah. He opened his own cage door once a long time ago, I was Heartbroken, He was gone.... I later found him nearby on a tree, watching and waiting for me, I was made up that I got him back, he had been gone for 2 hours. Good luck and let us all know when you get one. Will you be teaching your new bird Swear words? hehe.

I would add my 2baht to the suggestion for an African Grey.

When I had my Grey back in San Francisco my 90+ year old grandmother lived with me.

She had a pretty bad and distinctive cough in her last years and Baby, the Grey, mimicked it perfectly.

I well remember the day I came home from work and Rose, my grandma, said hey can you listen youa bird isa sick.

Baby mimicked the doorbell exactly and caused many unneeded trips to the door.

During Rose's last few months I hired a woman to help during the day. I got her through the ahhhh Italian Men's Club and

she was from the same area of Calabria as Rose and Baby soon mimicked both sides of their conversations in spirited Italian.

So yes they are bi-lingual.

Take the time to choose well, your bird should be part of your family for a long time.

Meg, that is certainly a lot less expensive than Mini's Aviary. DLock is quite right on the prices he has quoted. The Amazonian Parrot at Mini's is 50,000 baht.

Does anyone know of a good vet in Pattaya for birds???

Bob from Mini's said that if you use the head vet from the vet in Nuern Plub Warn Animal Hospital, Soi 53 that has provided his Aviary with satisfactory results. He also said that there is a good Avian vet at one of the Bangkok university's and also nearer in Sattahip but there does not seem to be a specially trained Avian vet in Pattaya.

Here is a link that you may already have seen if not it may be helpful: Vets in Thailand and a few mentioned in Pattaya.

Let me add a few comments here please, I am the Bob at Mini's Aviary.

JJ market as it is commonly called does not have bird breeders there. Those are retail low price/quality/service stores, the breeders avoid JJ because there are rampant diseases constantly being fought there. Birds kept in cramped cages and no real interaction with humans except for feeding. We specialize in young hand fed birds that my wife personally feeds up to 4 times a day. 90% of these young birds are sold before they are weaned and the new owners come in almost daily to bond with their new birds. A parrot is a lifetime purchase, we have had customers that have had their parrots for over 50 years.

We offer a guarantee posted on our windows that says. 72 hour money back guarantee if bird returned because of ill health of the bird. These prices are not negotiable. 90 day trade in allowance for less/more expensive bird, no refund.

See if anyone will give a guarantee in writing at JJ. We have had customers that purchased there and the bird died within 48 hours, when they went back to complain the store laughed at them,

I am not trying to say all birds purchased at JJ are going to be sick, but right now it is common knowledge in the industry that there is some kind of disease going around the market. Make sure you get some kind of guarantee in writing by the owner.

We have a much higher overhead than a stall at JJ and we quarantine our new birds either next door at our nursery or at our country home on 1 rai of land where we also keep and raise 15 dogs with the same concept as Mini's Aviary, that is we don't keep them in cages, they are free to romp and roam all over the property.

We fall in love with our birds as well as our dogs and when my wife sells one of my favorites and I grumble she reminds me that "remember this is our business"

Good luck to all of you on your parrot purchases from wherever you get them and if you need, cages, stands, food, toys or just some free advice feel free to stop by or PM me.

Sorry for the delay guys, I completely forgot to PM the info on here of the bird breeders where I purchased my lovely african grey at Jatujak.. I highly recommend taking a visit to their shop, and possibly save yourself a lot of money than buying in Pattaya. :D

I'll PM all the info to the people who requested it now. If you'de like a picture of my MK, feel free to ask and I'd be happy to show you what a lovely parrot he has grown up to be. :D He's chattering away (meowing) as I write this.. ha ha ha :o

Meg, that is certainly a lot less expensive than Mini's Aviary. DLock is quite right on the prices he has quoted. The Amazonian Parrot at Mini's is 50,000 baht.

I don't know about Amazonian Parrots but I did see some on my last visit to the shop in Jatujak, along with some cockatoo's and she said the price was around 12,000. I also got to see the mother and father of my African grey when purchasing.

I was quoted 25,000 baht at Mini's Aviary - I paid 10,000 at Jatujak. Just have a good look at the shop, parrots health, ask alot of questions ect. The lady who I bought MK from said I could call her 24 hours if I needed any help, or I could go back to her anytime.
