Help! Need To Transfer 33.6gb Of Files From Old To New Laptop

Hello,

Being anything else than a computer geek, I am stuck with finding a way to transfer all of my old files (total 33.6GB) to my new laptop.

I found some information on how to set up a home network on internet for easy file transfer but unfortunately I am simply unable to understand complexity of this and now stuck in a rut...

I would be glad if anybody could help with providing a simple step by step guide on how to transfer large files from laptop A to B or point me to right direction, that would be great.......many thanks in advance!!!!!

Buy a usb case for old notebook hd then plug usb drive into new notebook and drag/drop.

That would be my first option. If you are comfortable taking the drive out of your old machine and putting it into the external box, this is a good option.

Failing that, I would hie myself down to Panthip or Fortune Town and buy the largest USB drive (sometimes called a "thumb drive" :o ). I have seen 8 gb units selling cheaply enough. With an 8 gb drive it would take five "rounds" to get your data transferred.

Or, you could use a cat5 crossover cable and connect them directly via TCP/IP and drag n drop that way. That takes a little configuration, but not too much.

1) Give each computer an IP address in the same domain..ie, make one 192.168.1.1 and the other 192.168.1.2

2) Make the hard drive on each machine shared

3) Connect the crossover cable to each machine

4) On one machine, open a window to each C: drive

5) Drag n drop

Either of the above are fairly simple processes for most computer aware people to carry out.

What you need to do this is a computer aware person, is there an internet cafnear you with a friendly techie to hand. Relative or teenage son of family friend etc.

Many thanks for quick replies!!

britmaveric,

Regarding first option, do you mean buying an external HD, save all data on it and plug it into new laptop and drag and drop? Right? I guess that's simplest way to go, however I was more like looking for a step by step guide where I could transfer files wireless from A to B.

I cannot find a easy guide for this, if you would know solution, would be great...

mgjackson,

your solution is similar to above option, however 8 GB sticks are max capacity at moment. I guess they are probably cheaper then a 40GB HD???

Hello Cuban,

Thanks for your reply, yes a computer aware person would be great, but unfortunately nobody around here right now, I guess will make my way over to Pantip very soon and see what is available....

I think what britmaverick had in mind, and how I would do it, is get the external USB box, remove the hard drive from the old laptop, put it in the external box.

Connect the box to the new laptop, and *copy* (not move) your files onto the new computer.

Play with the new computer a bit, do some spot checks to make sure your files transferred successfully.

Put the drive back into the old computer, then do your file cleanup there as needed.

Inthai, I had to do this recently. Best and easiest solution I found was at Carrefour. They sell an Okion Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Bridge Net Link cable. Comes with a CD to install a simple program on each computer. Less than 5 minutes to set up. No need to set IPs or anything, it is dead easy, then just connect to the USB port of each computer and away you go. The cost? 209 baht! :o Best value bit of hardware I have ever bought. Transferred 40 GB of music in under an hour.

Sounds like a great and very cheap solution, thanks alot jeffer..

I actually thought of a cable too and went to central yesterday and bought a USB flexible computer signal cable for signal transfer between computers, unfortunately it doesn't work and there was no software, it also only cost me 99baht, probably bought wrong thing, I guess . Staff also had no idea what i was looking for so, will look for this Okion Cable this time, thanks again

Bought one on Friday at Fortune Town, 8gb Kingston Data Traveler with the "swing around" protector .. for THB 1,090, "No discount". Shop around. I saw 4 gb units for the same price.

If both laptop having a Ehternet Port, just use an Cross over cable and transfer the data from one to other laptop.

Maybe set the IP in Network settings for each computer. If you've an 4 Port Modem Router is even more easy connect both Laptop with an straigth cable to the router and transfer the data!

Cheers.

Just an update on the cable I suggested. It's the Okion LinkMe™ USB2.0 Fast Direct Link Cable PLUS USB LAN function

The price on the website is $32.99 however I've bought a second one today again for only 209 baht at Carrefour. Maybe it's a pricing error as it wouldn't scan at the checkout but the shelf price is 209 baht where I bought mine. It's the easiest method to transfer large files if you don't have an existing network setup, very little computer knowlege needed as the instructions are very easy to follow.

Just one comment - you really don't want to do it over WiFi because it would take ages.

I'd go for the external USB box which you can subsequently use as backup drive (you do backups, right? if not, start now :o ). Or that USB magic cable jeffer recommended.
