King Power Complex

Today I went with friends to the King Power Complex by Victory Monument. Noticing their stock of whisky, we asked a few questions, such as... can we buy alcohol any time (like at Villa Market)... and do we need our passports?

The answer was a surprise. Yes, we could buy whenever, but our purchase had to be picked up at the airport.

This makes no sense at all so I'm wondering if it's true.

Sounds like the same policy they had at the old World Trade Center branch...it is basically a city branch of the duty free shop, hence the rule.

It's pretty simple actually, you order and pay for what you want there (Victory Monument), and they take the stock from their shops at the airport and deliver it to you at the gate I guess.

Have you been to King Power? It's huge. A huge waste of space if that's the case.

I wasn't interested in the overpriced pieces (items marked 1,400 baht that you could purchase for 300 baht elsewhere). But cutting my travel time for whisky (Paragon or down Suk) would have been welcome.

I have been there, but bear in mind that it is attached to the new Pullman Hotel which caters to mostly Japanese / Korean tour groups / FITS who find it convenient to shop there. Go figure.

So people fight BK traffic to get to VM, just so they can pre-order the very same items they can purchase while hanging around waiting for their flight at the airport?

Apologies, but I'm laughing here. I haven't run across anything as bizarre as this since living in Brunei. And I know a lot of things in Thailand are a bit off the wall to westerners, but I haven't had this reaction to them (maybe it's the weather...

As flight crew I get 20pct discount from King Power. Basically I go there with Thai friends who want to order some duty free stuff as they are not travelling. On my way out for a flight I pick it up at the airport, bring it with me to where ever I'm going and then bring it back in. Some stuff is cheap such as makeup and liquor when they have promotions. Otherwise, when I have flights to Europe or States I find Costo or Tesco cheaper!

The buffet is not bad though and pretty cheap.

No kidding. I went to Paragon this afternoon. The whisky I tried to buy at King Power is the same price at Paragon. Other items I checked out at KP were many times what they can be purchased for around BK. I'd like to know what their description of 'duty free' is.

It makes sense to me as KPW is a duty free shop. The branch you went was is just a shop that may make your life easy..as you need not to waste your shopping time at the a/p.

Thais can't buy items there either unless they have an itinerary one.
