It will be a close run thing and may depend on the swimming battle USA vs Australia. China will give it their all as this whole shebang is less and less about sports and more about national "face". China is moving heaven and earth to ensure this event runs smoothly to demonstrate China's emergence as a world power. This effort will go right through from the opening ceremony, the events themselves, the supporting infrastructure, the air pollution and the closing bash. The Chinese athletes will be under tremendous pressure to perform and whilst not under any threat of punative action should they fail you can bet on big buck bonusses for success.

I think the USA will lead the medals table but you didn't include a "I don't give a flying duck" option but then I suppose "Others" could fit that bill. Personally I don't care much for the Olympics these days and would like to see it scaled back with less of the "artistic impression" events and return to the basics of fastest, highest, strongest etc.

Well, it seems pretty clear now CHINA will win the most golds, and the USA will win the most overall medals.

However, I do hope CHINA is stripped of some of their golds because they CHEATED. Some of their gymnasts are so obviously UNDERAGE that it isn't even funny, so now indeed there is the beginning of an inquiry that may and should lead to the removal of some gymnastic Chinese medals.

IOC to Probe Gymnast's Age

The IOC has requested an inquiry into the age eligibility of China's gold medalist He Kexin. (Reuters)

Here we go, sour grapes now that the yanks will come second. I seem to recall several very high profile yank athletes being stripped of gold medals for being drug cheats.

You got me wrong. It won't change the Chinese gold medal victory. They deserve that. But this gymnast is 14. The RULES say she needs to be 16. Rules is rules. Chinese nationalists got a little too greedy with this one ...

There is a paper trail in the Chinese press. Earlier in her career her true age was reported but when the Olympics came up, they changed their story. They think people can't do the math? It reflects badly on the Olympics officials that they even allowed these little babies to compete in the first place. It only happened because China is the host country and a disgustingly totalitarian government as well.

If you are Chinese and offended, GOOD. Don't cheat. Don't jail old ladies who just want to protest, and then you might get a better reputation. China wanted to open themselves up to the world? Well, you did. Some good, some bad. You can't totally control the press OUTSIDE China. Yet.

It looks like you're attacking me. Lower your voice please and try to be a gentleman.

Don't lower yourself by using such words and don't attack me personally and a complete nation of 1.3 Billion people. If you wish to attack the Chinese (or any other) government, up to you, but don't insult a complete nation or me for asking you a question.

Shame on you Sir.

No. Shame on the government of the "People's" Republic of China. Long live FREE TAIWAN! And Tibet.

I hate the government of China almost as much as I hate George Bush, and that's saying something.

I don't blame the little baby cheaters for what they did. They are great athletes and NEXT Olympics they will LEGITIMATELY earn medals.

Yes, I know the 1.3 billion Chinese nation doesn't like to be insulted. Their face is so very precious to them. We get the message. With the big armies and Stalinist drum displays. We are afraid.

You are joking right? Don't you realize this whole big China Olympics show was mostly done by the totalitarian Chinese government for POLITICAL PROPAGANDA purposes? Well, alot of people aren't buying their message. Hope that is OK with you. Is political free speech a shameful thing to you? That is interesting.

You are a disgrace to your own topic which was a QUESTION about Olympic GOLD medals; nothing more nothing less. NOW you twist it into your own political thread.

If you wish to start a political thread about a certain government I suggest you do that elsewhere on Thaivisa.

But before you do so, ask the Admin/Mods if that's allowed. :o

Mr. Po,

The politics of China is RELATED to this topic. Who do you think pushed these baby girls to CHEAT and LIE? Who tampered with their CHINESE PASSPORTS? Their government. Their TOTALITARIAN government. The same one without a free press or a free internet. Where are you coming from that you wish to CENSOR this free speech?

I would much rather be "a disgrace to my own topic" as you so poetically charged than to be an APOLOGIST for the Chinese government's propaganda machine.

1) Britain's Beth Tweedle missed out on medal(s) because of this child so does that mean the Brits must be pushing the yanks on this issue for their own benefit?

2) Yes, several high profile yanks HAVE BEEN CAUGHT cheating and have had their medals taken away. Why is it when people get caught cheating they get their medals taken away - unless they happen to be China?

Anyway, here's a good link:

I am in favor of athletes from ALL NATIONS who have cheated, lied about their age, or doped up be stripped of any medals they have fraudently earned. Politics has nothing to do with that. It is a simple matter of fairness in competition.

You folks are over the top on this one.

Cool it down a notch or two, please.

The Olympics are supposed to be a celebration of athletic excellence....not an excuse for couch potatoes who couldn't make Little League minors to thump their chests in a fit of nationalistic fury.

Who really cares what nation wins more gold or silver or bronze or pewter or charcoal?

It is the individuals and teams exhibiting athletic excellence that should be rewarded with our applause. Where ever they may be from.

Not from the USA, China, Russia, UK. or Australia, are you?

Who are you to tell people how to view the Olympics anyway? You come off like a preacher.

They are not a pure sports event. Anyone who thinks they are is smoking fairy dust. Hitler knew that and so does Hu.

Were you speaking as a mod, or your own view, because if you were speaking as mod, I truly think you went too far.

BTW: I could give a fig if China won ALL the medals. That isn't the point.

If you want 100 percent definite proof why the Olympics and ESPECIALLY the Beijing PROPAGANDA Olympics is largely a POLITICAL event, for the benefit of the totalitarian government of the PRC, take a look again at the sign TAIWAN was REQUIRED to carry: CHINESE TAIPEI. That is NOT the name of their country.

Hu's on first?

I've watched pretty much all the major events (as well as most of the non-major ones), and I did watch the gymnastics.

What I can say is... He Kexin is an amazing athlete :o

I did know about this controversy too about her age. She probably is just 14, which makes her performances that bit more special for me :D Great athlete.

and.. Beth Tweddle should have won a medal, I'm not a judge, but to me her performance was easily worth a gold medal, better than anyone I saw.

no rants from me though.

ps. from UK

You don't understand gymnastics if you say that, being underage gives an unfair advantage, they have more flexibility. What you admired was most likely a cheating performance. In Greece, the Americans had some underage probable gold medal winners and they followed the rules and didn't get those golds. Is China so special they get to make up their own rules?

No but they should be accorded the same rights that we crow about in the west. No-one has yet been found guilty of being underage. Until they are, they are entitled to be considered the winner.

You are being silly, Their LIES are being protected by one of the most horrible governments in the world. The Olympic committee is not in any position to do anything but accept the LIES of this totalitarian regime. There will be no trial or any credible investigation. Ever. The medals are a sham.

By the way, referring to He Kexin as

the little Chinese cheater babies
is very unfair.

Do you really think she would be able to make the choice whether to participate or not?

Just wanted to say :o

And, yes, I too think that what the Chinese government has done regarding some participant 'nations', but that's for another time :D

I'd prefer to wait and see whether there'll be a credible investigation or not. You may not want to bother.
I won't bother because its never going to happen.

You are right. The cheater babies would have been forced into this by their government. I don' t blame them personally.

A fair hearing you say? Yeah, right. What other Chinese propaganda do you believe?

As Gymnastics Cheating Evidence Grows, IOC Shrinks

Washington Post, Sally Jenkins

Everyone is playing sleuth over whether China cheated in women's gymnastics. The hope is that the officials who govern Olympic competition will conduct a straightforward investigation, but regrettably, such a thing seems to be beyond their scope and spine at this point. Who are you going to believe, the Chinese government, or the Chinese government? The authorities at the Beijing Games have considered the question, and for the moment have decided to believe the Chinese government.

The IOC has consistently rationalized its inaction in the Beijing gymnastics controversy by claiming that enforcement is not its job. But Olympic historian Davvid Wallechinsky, author of the encyclopedic "Complete Book of the Summer Olympics," points out that the IOC can step in on an ethical matter when it chooses to. Before these Games began, the IOC unilaterally declared Greek sprinter Eketarina Thanou ineligible for a pattern of doping offenses, declaring she was too disreputable to compete, even though she had served out her penalty and was considered eligible by the track and field federation.

"There is precedent for the IOC to overrule a situation," Wallechinsky says.

To Wallechinsky, the Chinese appear to have committed "an obvious violation," especially given the mounting evidence in the case of He. He wonders why the IOC couldn't perform some basic shoe-leather detective work. "If it was me I'd be sending an investigative team out to her village and town, going to her neighbors, her primary school," he said. "But I'm not the head of the IOC."

Instead, the "inquiry" remains uncomfortably incomplete and apparently reliant on documents provided by the very people accused of cheating, the Chinese state. Even if the gymnasts receive absolution, we won't know whether to believe it.
