Hey "Prakanong", seems that more people are thinking the way I am.

Or maybe the fault lies with foreigners trying to circumvent the law? and in the end get screwed?

It is not your country. You cant own land. Period.

Exactly.

Alas, still to many foreigners don't realize that and need to learn the reality with a hard lesson.

To those of you who say she was ugly, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". She may be ugly to you, but then again, I'll bet some of your sig others are considered ugly to other people. Besides you have no idea what she looked like when they married and she was still in her 30's.

While he was in his late 50's.

A "handsum" men.

IF I thought my husband was trying to kill me I would not just talk about it. I would up, move, and get my belongings from a DISTANCE! Or consider it a bad lesson learned, and return to my home country in shame but with my life.

FULLY AGREE.

What I still dont get is, why you would move to a foreign country and not leave some emergency money in the bank at home.

Specially when you come to Thailand with over 350,000 British Ponds.

A "wise" guy would leave at least 1,000 BP in a Bank at home for "emergency" cases.

What if he falled ill and needed urgent medical care?

Not the brightest bulb in the socket ....

Luckely for me, I never baught an English Ford car.

And when you get to be 60 and lonely

Do you have to get married, just to be happy and not lonely?

Can you just have a good companionship without that “piece of paper“? If you still have some of those naggy feelings about your partner.

I don't "plan" to marry anyone. I certainly appreciate a beautiful and sexy young woman with pearly whites (who is NOT a b/g), but if a 20 ish yo. whether she be Thai or another nationality tells me I'm handsome, she loves me, money is not important and wants to marry me, I am running the other way.

A questions asked hundreds of times in the past and willbe in the future - having been skint in a country and having emergency funds back home my Mum was told never to send me was an experience - she bloody never sent them and I am glad of that now.

"Skint" sounds nasty and cannot be good. Not everyone has Prakanong's genius to have contingency plans. Many here in Thailand survive by skill and others by luck. I hope this will be a lesson for future retirees to have an exit strategy but regrettably this pattern will continue forever. Most of us have found a girl or woman who is universally labeled, "she's different". With that attitude most of the failed relationships will mirror ones that we have all seen and heard about. Living on foreign soil and in your other half's country means we are at greater risk when things go bad in a relationship. Buyer beware!

I can assure you it was not genius that I had the funds at home - it was monies owed to me paid after I left the UK that wasbanked by my Mum - feeling flush I told her to put it in a new account without ATM and keep the passbook - if it was all to go tits up in my new business venture do not send me the money - she kept her word. A pal paid my airfare home and he was repaid within the week and I was working again within the month in a job in my field but totally different area that eventually got me posted back to Asia as a regional manager - I was bloody lucky and know many who were and are not.

As for the poor guy in the OP - I nearly bought ahouse up in the village when me and the ex was married - It was money I could have walked away from and actually bought a watch with the proceeds instead ;-)

Of course there will be more than one opinion - that is a good thing.

As I said I agree with a lot of your points except for blaming the victim - its a bit too close to "She asked for it" for me

There is no doubt he should not have stayed there - I am sure his friends advised him but some people are stubborn or have nothing else to run to.

Personally i would have wanted to burn the house down and walk away but thats just how petty I am ;-)

Some more numbers.

Thailand has one of the world's highest per-capita murder rates – when the UN last counted it in 2000, it stood at 5,140 per year, though the annual total is now speculated to be more than 6,000. In the years 2003 to 2006, 17 of these victims were UK nationals, according to the FCO. These murders include a sexually motivated killing of a young British woman; a Thai police officer executing two backpackers in a crowded street; shootings, throat cuttings and two cases of other Westerners murdering UK nationals; and, more pertinently, several cases of Thai wives or their family members slaying British husbands.

On average, about 50 civilian UK nationals are murdered around the world each year (excluding terrorist attacks). This means that almost 10 per cent of all murders of Britons abroad are committed in Thailand – a chilling figure, given that Thailand comprises only 0.6 per cent of all foreign travel from UK shores.

Do you mean that skimming old fahrangs is a skill that is only mastered by THAI girls?

You should travel a little bit more around the world and see how many fahrangs are skimmed and/or murdered by Philippino girls/ladyboys and others.

Surprise guaranteed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was maybe not clear enough in my answer (Thinglish is not my primary language).

I feel really sorry for the guy and I wouldn't want to be the person who is suffering 7 hours in agony before I'm ready to be "flashed up" to meet whoever is waiting up there.

But reading the stories, this guy seems to have made such a lot of mistakes that I hardly can believe that he was a skilled engineer at Ford England.

He knew that his live was in danger, still he remained in the house selling his properties to be able to pay himself a plane ticket.

If I was so desperate as he was, I would have chosen for your solution and burnt down the house with everything in it.

But you are right on this, people are stubborn and dont want to believe to good advises.

I have read vaguely a new thread about another Englishman (Irish?) who want to live in Thailand and leave Britain with some debts open.

NEVER BURN BRIDGES BEHIND YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You could need them sooner as you think.

So we are now blaming the victim for his murder on the basis that he was a fool?!

A guy who had been working for the Ford Cy as a designer for many years is not exactly what your could

call "a dumb" person.

You are assuming that inteligence and qualifications in a career have any bearing on the ability of an individual to make decisions on a matter in which they are emotionally involved - That's an assumption fraught with error.

Yet he managed to make mostly ALL the mistakes anyone traveling abroad can make.

Or is that only ineteligent people make - People make mistakes - People who are emotionally involved in the decisions they make are often (almost always) unable to disconnect their emotions from their dicision making.

Marrying a (bar)girl who is almost 30 year younger as himself, spend all his money and his assets on her and burning all the bridges for his return with his actions (remember, he was trying to buy an airplamne ticket to return to the UK)

Agree - but it's not something that only he has done - Plenty of people have done this, are doing this and will do this in the future - Few will be murdered for their mistake.

OK, lets blame the UK school system fir his stupidities.

I have said he was foolish - My reference to 'Thick' was not a comment on the victim here.

Anyone can be a fool from time - But you've got to be plain thick to blame the victim.

Correct, anyone can be a fool from time to time.

But what this guy did surpasses the word "fool".

But becomes understandable when one considers the emotional involvement.

BTW, if he was afraid for his life and wanted to return to the UK, why didn't he contacted the UK Embassy?

You have obviously no experience with dealing with British Embassy on these matters - They do not dole out air tickets.

The people responsible for his death are the people who viscously murdered him - Period!

According to the numbers of foreigners who died by crime in Thailand (somewhere else in this thread), dying by crime in Thailand seems to be the standard for foreigners. Far too common I agree - Standard - I'm sure I'm not the first to suggest you ought not exagerate so.

And i have no figures about this, but how many of these "viscously" murderers have been convicted and are in jail? You'd need the figures to answer that.

I have read that the wife of the "viscously murdered" Canadian guy is walking happily in the streets It happens - Who was that basket ball player?

You are talking about Thailand, ain't you? Yes we are taling about Thailand

If you removed the fools from Thailand's Farang population, the place would be practically deserted for foreigners - Not all get murdered.

Agree!!!!!

Most are waiting for their turn to be slaughtered. Do try to stick to reality

Next one, please.

Why - Because very few Thais are viscous, scheming scum like the two who murdered this old man.

Uhhhhhhhhhh??????????

Are you serious??????????????

Come over to my house and I will show a lot of Thais who have gambled all their assets and their money on the lottery or in a casino (I'm talking about sums ranging form 500,000 Baht to 4 mill. Baht and more).

Gambling is almost a religion on Asia.

So you know a few gamblers - There is a guy across the office from me who has gambled over GBP200K in the last two years - He's a bit odd, but I don't imagine him killing anyone.

The case remains - The people responsible for killing this guy (fool if you like) are the people who viscously murdered him - Period!

The truth is that most of the Thai ladies married to farang have Thai boyfriends(pimps) hanging around to spend the farangs cash. Thai men are happy with the arrangement as long as they get their slice of the cake. When the farang's money runs out, well that farang can leave without his money or face many problems. There's plenty of greed in Thailand, even the parents encourage them to rip off farang and sell their bodies. One Thai person recently said to me that money is god! Well it sometimes seems that way in Thailand.

I am not aware of any survey that has arrived at the conclusion that most Thai women, married to westerners, have pimps - this sounds like the ramblings of a misogynist to me. This is the sort of story that you normally hear from a lecherous drunk who is trying to tell you his theory of women while he dribbles on your shoulder.

However it is in the nature of most people in the SE Asia region to gamble and Thailand is no exception. Just about anything can be used as an opportunity to bet. There are transboundary lotteries, football matches, illegal bookmaking at the races, boxing matches, cockfights and fish fights. A recent report in the Bangkok Post newspaper stated that "Each year, the gambling world in Thailand turns over 320 million Baht. Around 110 million of this goes to gambling dens, 92 million goes to underground lotteries, 51 million goes on football bets and about 38 million to the state-run lottery"

Gambling is a major source of income for the black economy, including drug trafficking, tax evasion, illicit arms trade, prostitution and illegal logging to mention a few.

There are moves to legalise gambling to increase the state revenue, promote tourism, create new businesses and jobs, and decrease the amount of illegal cash in circulation.

Gambling with Thailand

Pasuk Phongpaichit

Draft extract from Utsahakam kan phanan, February 1999

There is a lot of gambling in Thailand. An estimated 70 percent of adults gamble regularly, and the total value added involved is huge—possibly over 200 billion baht a year. With some small exceptions, all of this gambling activity is illegal.

I think any expat living long term in Thailand needs to have a "planned escape route" if things go tits up.

Be it enough money in a bank account to buy a flight home or even a shorter flight to a country like Malaysia where you are automatically given a 90 day visa which would give you time to think things out and plan for the future.

But this poor guy had transport and must have been getting a British State pension plus, quite likely,a pension from Fords as well.

So why was he described as penniless, living on mashed potatoes and food handouts from friends ?

Maybe he thought he could stick it out and win, maybe he had just given up.

Something doesnt ring quite true with this story.Quite possibly we'll find out more later.

It sounds like you have had a bad experience with a Thai woman, regardless what you say, maybe not, but hey your rant here is a bit over the top.

Everybody has got different experience, some good some bad. Maybe some Thai women have got a Farang husband and Thai boyfriend and maybe some don't.

A lot of us will never know until, as you say untill the money runs out. I have a girl friend(she prefers to be wife) I have shown her your post and as you can imagine she got very defensive. Do you think she has a Thai boyfriend or is she angry? I ask you this as you seem to know everything about all Thai woman.

I know a few farang here who are very happy with thier wife/girl friend and I aslo know others that have not been so lucky, so that is my survey of the people I know. I have been together with my girl friend for almost 16 months and we still rent a condo, we are talking about buying a house (in her name in 2 years, her choise for the time) I like to think I am lucky, I hope her Thai boy friend has got patience.

"Your view reminds me of another near murder more than a decade ago when a Thai wife imprisoned her old Brit husband in cage in the jungle and starved him. He survived only by chance when a Christian missionary found him. The wife's rationale to police? "We all have to die sometime." "

I remember that one - ex-copper from Leicestershire.

I thought it was an American Bhuddist who the Brit slipped the help note too when he passed through the village though and I do not remember a cage but rather slowly poisoned and too weak to leave the house.

If I remember corerectly his brother and mother flew over after a call from the American

YES, that sounds very much like the case. It made headlines in the UK/USA tabloids and even (shock!) found its way into the Pattaya Mail. Could have been Buddhist, not Christian, but I seem to remember a "missionary passing through/working a remote area" angle. In the account I read (you may have read a somewhat different one), he was being slowly poisoned (now that you're reminded me) and starved out in a cage in the jungle. In the meantime, back at the house, she was collecting all his monthly pension money. He was incredibly lucky to have survived.

Wish I'd kept that article. The wife was a former Pattaya bargirl; they'd even had a fine wedding back in the UK.

There are many successful farang-Thai marriages, but you only hear about the ones that have problems. Bad news sells newspapers.

This is a particularly awful case and i sympathise for the old guy as i think that he could not find a way out of the mess he got himself into. The thing that i find very strange is that he knew that he was going to be murdered and he did not do a runner. Maybe he had just given up?

Some of my farang friends have devoted wives who are much younger than them and there is no way that i could see them doing anything like this. There is good and bad everywhere.

Whatever it's a lousy way to die and also in a foreign country.

RIP.
