Computer Programme Needed

Featured Replies

Hi Comp Boffins,

Anybody help me with a programme I need for my Comp. What I am after is a programme that deletes the whole Hard Drive if you enter my signing on password wrong 3 times.[A bit like an ATM machine that takes your card after 3 attempts].

The reason, for this is I have client information from the UK and Europe on my Comp, and if it does get nicked,I will be happy they cannot gain access too the information.

Thanks in advance

Why delete/wipe the whole Hard disk? Instead I would use an program for encrypt the important data. There even a lot Freeware available, just google for free encryption software and you'll get a lot hits!

Cheers.

Yup, I'm with Reimar. It's way too easy to bypass your method. Just remove the drive, set it up as a slave on another machine and bingo, all your data is visible.

Have a look at Truecrypt for some real security for your data, it's free too :o

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Don't even have to encrypt the entire file system. If it is just a few files that contain the information I would encrypt those only.

As the two above said, there are plenty of freeware encryption software available.

I would argue that encrypted data is actually more safe that deleted data.

You're 100% right with that. Even if you delete the data from your HDD, maybe also using to wipe the HDD several times, the data still available on the HDD and can be recovered. I've done such jobs several times.

The use of encrypted data is the most secure way to use high confidential data. Without the "Encryption-Key" no one will be able to read the data.

Ok, nothing is perfect and that applies for encryption as well. But it need a lot of effort, time, equipment and software to hack encrypted data back to it's origial. And those who able to do that really rare.

Cheers.
