Pig Sales

Featured Replies

My wife and family have developed a nice little pig farm in northern Thailand and now need to find a solid and competetively priced market for their hogs. For you veterens, what is the best way to develop a stable and fair valued market for about 80-100 hogs per month? Any help of suggestions you can offer will be much appreciated. All the best!!

Putting the cart before the horse I reckon. Before going into pigs on that scale, one would have thought a suitable market would have been found before starting. Not easy shifting that amount of pigs each month without being contracted to a big buyer. How many sows?

Yes - 80 pigs a month is no small endeavour if you are hoping to do so at a price that keeps the books looking good. My suspicion is you have a task and a half on your hands.

Its going to be little problem moving them at market rates - but market rates for pork in Thailand leave one with such tight margins that its really only the guys who are shifting hundreds if not thousands of carcasses per month that do well.

I know very little about pigs, but I do know that the "make or break" very often revolves around feed costs. You are going to have to explore all options for reducing feed costs (e.g. collecting scraped food from resturants and hotels ...... probably find someone has beaten you to it in your area), any thing you can do to reduce feed costs will be a big plus.

Good luck

... collecting scraped food from resturants and hotels ......

A very big No! No! these days in light of genuine bio-security concerns.
