1 killed, 2 missing, 10 injured in flash flooding in Nan

NAN: -- Nan - A woman was killed and two other women went missing when flash floods hit their village late Friday night, a senior official said Saturday.

Adul Kaewbanchong, chief civil disaster prevention and mitigation officer of Nan, said the flash flood hit several villages in Tambon Tanchook and Tambon Sriphume of Tha Wang Pha district at about 11:55 pm.

The three women were residents of Ban Huay Thanu village of Tambon Tanchook.

Adul said Khamporn Pano, 43, was washed away while trying to escape the torrential waters. Her body was found later in creek near the village.

The two women, who went missing, were identified as On Uthiay, 62, and Som Chaiyasalee, 64.

Adul said ten other people were injured.

interesting news clip, but where is Nan?

I used to live in the next village to where the unfortunate women died. Things are definately taking a turn for the worse climate-wise around those parts.

3 years ago they had floods in my village (about a kilometer from the river Nan) for the first time in 40 years, it happened again a year later and now this. 2 years ago the flood water was 2 meters deep in most of the village and everyone had to spend a few nights in the local school as it's on higher ground. The problem isn't just the depth of the water but the fact that it was really fast flowing. I was pretty frightened when we had to wade though the water to safety and I can easily imagine how the poor women got swept away.

I was very impressed with the actions of the authorities however. A day after the floods came the army were delivering food parcels by helicopter. In fact it was embarrassing the amount of aid we received, we had to start turning it down in the end as there was just so much of it. After the flood waters subsided a team of about a dozen mechanics from a neighbouring town set up shop in the temple grounds and fixed everyone's washed-out motorbikes for free. I somehow can't imagine that happening back in Britain where I come from....

It's pretty soul destroying returning to your flooded home and having to start cleaning up though.

My sympathies to all concerned this time around.

My condolences to the families of the victims and all those injured. My thoughts will be with those having to clean up.
