Okay, I went to Laos in July and got a 60 day tourist visa, which I used to reenter thailand on July 30th. I am trying to figure out when that 60 days is up and I can't quite seem to get the math to work. I think it expires on September 29th but I'm not sure...and my passport doesn't say.

I know you lose a day from each month, or you seem to at least. I'm leaving Thailand on October 1st...I'm wondering if I should go do the extension at the immigration office, or pay the overstay, and which would be cheaper?

When you entered Thailand with that visa on July 30 the immigration officer should have stamped your passport with a rectangular stamp with the text “admitted 30 JUL 2008 until 27 SEP 2008”. Therefore, September 27 is the latest when you must leave Thailand or apply for an extension of stay. If that stamp is missing in your passport you should go to an immigration office to get the problem solved.

Ah, thank you! I was looking at the visa itself and completely forgot there should be a stamp. It was tucked away under where they stapled my arrival form inside my visa. 27th of September, just like you said. So the 28th wouldn't be a problem, then 500 baht for the 29th, 30th and 1st...

Huh. Cheaper to just pay the overstay, even if only by two hundred baht...

Of course, I run the risk of somehow getting arrested and sent to prison in those lovely three days...

It really is not wise to overstay, particularly as you have the option of a 30 day extension, getting picked up the night before your flight out would be a nightmare.

Whilst an overstay stamp is not currently an issue when getting a visa or entering the country who knows when our hosts will decide that it IS a problem :o

EDIT Actually, you get charged for the first day (it's only free if it's the ONLY day), so paying 1900 Baht for the extension is one beer cheaper :D
