Lili prances to pole position

KUALA LUMPUR: A Thai national danced her way to "pole position" in the recent Clorets Amateur Pole Dancing Competition grand finals at Zouk.

Lili Ussaraporn Kosin, a dance instructor and choreographer from Thailand, beat seven finalists to bag RM5,000 [50,364 Baht] and a one-year gym membership at Celebrity Fitness worth RM3,000 [30,218 Baht].

Lili captivated both the judges and the audience with her standout showgirl theme, amazing agility, unique moves, and stamina.

"My aim in joining this competition isn't just to win the lucrative prizes, but also to introduce pole dancing to people in ASEAN countries.

"Pole dancing is an art and it can be sexy without stripping," said the 29-year-old, who revealed that she learned the dance while studying in London.

For their final number, all eight finalists had to perform a three-minute, self-choreographed solo routine, for which they were judged based on their technical ability, artistic interpretation and presentation.

Second place winner was Yer Mei Er, 28, who chose the Pink Panther theme as her track. She won RM3,000 in cash and a nine-month gym membership worth RM2,500.

Andrew Tan, 21, the only male dancer who made it to the finals, won third place with his wu-shu and karate martial arts-inspired techniques and dance moves.

He took home RM2,000 in cash and a six-month membership at Celebrity Fitness worth RM1,500.

Also performing at the occasion were local celebrities such as singer-songwriter Hannah Tan and Mix FM deejay Pietro Felix. Their tango with the pole electrified the crowd, along with the moves of Harith Iskandar and Sasi the Don.

Watching from the sidelines were the judges, comprising managing director of Cadbury Confectionery Malaysia, Blair Sailes; general manager of Carat Interactive, David Ho; CEO of Salina and Associates PR, Salina Yeop Junior; executive creative director of McCann-Erickson Malaysia, Lee Szu Hung and consultant of Viva Vertical, Vivian Lea.

Dance instructress takes pole dancing title

All 15 Clorets Dark Secret Amateur Pole Dance finalists danced their heart out in an intense and exhilarating contest that saw them performing various styles ranging from classical ballet to cabaret-like movements, modern dance, swing and even martial arts.

The finale was held last Friday in Zouk, KL, where about 200 fans, friends and celebrities turned up to cheer them on.

Selected based on clarity, technical and artistic value, Lili Ussaraporn Kosin, 29, charmed the judges with her effortless, graceful movements and dance routine to emerge as the queen of the pole and the champion.

"I’m so excited but I didn’t expect to win as there are so many talented dancers," said Lili, who only picked up pole dancing for a month.

The dance instructor said all the practising was worth it, not just because she won but it has also made her physically stronger and versatile.

Lili walked away with RM5,000 and a Celebrity Fitness one-year gym membership valued at RM3,000.

First runner-up was another commercial dancer, Yee Mei Er, 28, (stage name Sam) who took home RM3,000 and a Celebrity Fitness nine-month gym membership valued at RM2,500.

"Although I’m a dancer, pole dancing is very new to me," she said, adding that she will now consider adding some of the routine into her stage performances.

It was an entertaining Clorets Dark Secret Amateur Pole Dance grand final. The event had the crowd’s attention from the beginning to the end.

With appearances by Mix FM deejay Pietro Felix and singer-songwriter Hannah Tan, the event kicked off with the top 15 semi-finalists’ doing a brief introduction before eight finalists were chosen.

The finalists then took turns to perform their three-minute self choreographed solo routine. They were judged based on technical ability, artistic interpretation, and presentation.

The panel of judges were Cadbury Confectionary Malaysia managing director Blair Sailes, Carat Interactive general manager David Ho, Salina & Associates chief executive officer Salina Yeop Junior, McCann-Erickson executive creative director Lee Szu Hung and Viva Vertical consultant and trainer Vivian Lea.

There was thunderous applause when contestant Lili Kosin took to the stage.

Looking sultry with a flower in her hair, Kosin, who is a dance instructor danced to her music with grace, making pole dancing look effortless.

It was no wonder when she won the first prize of RM5,000 and Celebrity Fitness one-year membership worth RM3,000.

The second place went to Yee Mer Er-Sam. The dancer exhibited a flexible routine that also captured the crowd’s attention. She won RM3,000 and Celebrity Fitness nine-month gym membership worth RM2,500.

The American entry did not do so well, but was seen warming up in the car park.

Good dancing by ladyboy Lili, but dam_n those girls screaming in the background were annoying.

got to agree with ozsamuirai, lila hasn't a fraction of the skill, stamina, grace or agility of the girl who won the Australia 2006 comp, she was just amazing. Make you wonder how bad the other contestants were

With a footwear handicap like that most Thai ladies would have a hard job just crossing the road, let alone doing gymnastics

I got my instruction from this guy (ignore the dog coller and whip please)

But do admit he gives me a bit of the creaps...
