From my text book

I had thought เพียงแค่ means only but here it seems to mean something along the lines of as soon as something is done, consequently another thing will happen?

It does mean only.

This sentance translates roughly to :- "I only have enough to pay my rent but not enough to eat, my salary is not enough to eat as well"

Seems to me that these are two separate sentences. And, the words "เพียงแค่" must be viewed in the context of the entire sentence as follows:

After paying just the rent alone, I have no money left.

My monthly salary alone is not enough to live on.

Yes they are two different examples. Thanks for the responses.
