Was having a chat with a mate today regarding kids. Lets say. I'm British with residence in Oz and my soon to be wife is Thai. If we had a kid in Oz. What passports could they hold? Oz, Uk and Thai. Is it possible to hold 3 passports? Just a thought for the future. And no my gf is not pregnant.

OZ has no problems with dual/triple nationality. Since the Australian Citizenship Act (1949) was ammended in 2002, all Australians can hold as many nationalities they like.

But, the kid has to be born in OZ for him to get OZ citizenship. He can't get OZ citizenship by descent, only Thai and UK nationality be descent.

BTW, if the wife and I have kids here in the UK, they will be automatically eligible for Thai, OZ and NZ citizenship, plus a British PP if we stay here for the full 5 years.

I bet Rupert wishes that had happened a bit sooner

Rupie had to abandon the Aussie citizenship to achieve what he wanted to achieve the media ownership issues in Septicland. Do they still describe him as the dirty digger I wonder :o

Samran,

If you have kids in the UK and either you or your wife has indefinite leave to enter then they will automatically be British.

Scouse.

Wish it were so Scouse! Unfortunately the wife and I only on an Highly Skilled Migrant Permit. If the kids are born before I get ILR in 3.5 years (pretty likely) they will have to get the UK PP on my coat tails.

As for Rupert, Bronco, I am serious in saying this, Rupert Murdoch is a major factor why our Citzenship laws took so long to reform. If he was allowed to automatically get back his Australian nationality, it would wreak havoc on our cross media ownership status quo.

What if my wife (Thai) & I (Aus) have a kid in Thailand, does my kid get Aus citizenship? Or does he/she have to be born in Oz?

14. I was born overseas to an Australian parent. Am I an Australian citizen?

You are eligible for registration as an Australian citizen by descent if you were born overseas and:

    * one of your parents was an Australian citizen at the time of your birth;

    * you are under 25 years of age;

    * you are of good character (applicants aged 18 and over). Form 47P tells you how to get a police certificate in your country of residence.

No, your child can be born anywhere. If born in OZ, with one parent as an OZ citizen the child automatically becomes Australian.

If born overseas, the child will get Australian citizenship via descent (so long as one parent is Australian), but you need to register his/her birth at the Australian embassy in BKK first.

Phewww! That's handy to know for the future. Thanks!

The difference between you and the original poster was that he was only a Permanent Resident of OZ. If his baby was born in OZ, then no worries, becomes an Australian citizen automatically.

If the was born overseas, then the child is not entitled to Australian citizenship, though he is entitled to be bought to Australia as a dependent of a Permanent Resident.
