Need Some Shopping Advice !

hi all ,

i could do with some help, so thanks in advance for any replies,

i am currently looking to buy and furnish a small home in thailand, i need a range of items , mainly appliances such as fridge freezer, washing machine, tv, stereo, shower etc etc.

i was hoping to buy them from the uk using a visa credit card and picking them up in bangkok, if possible could someone recommend a no risk business/web business which i could safely order from the uk and collect in thailand.

alternatively a business i could walk into , pay using the cc and walk out with the goods.

obviously the best prices are important but if all is convenient a larger price tag would be acceptable.

www.powerbuy.co.th

is the ideal type of business but i'm told you have to pay using an order from a bank account (debit order) is this untrue and please let me know any other links or ideas that could be of help,

thanks again :o

Sureley you have to buy your small home first and see what size rooms you have and what is already there, there are plenty of superstores to choose from, and to get the best price for what you need, if you buy a place [or rent more like] stay in a hotel till you have your house a you want it,

Cheers Lickey..

you can buy furniture from most shopping malls using your credit cards

there are also dedicated home accessories superstores such as HomePro, HomeWorks. they all accept credit cards

Powerbuy also accepts credit cards

then there is Makro - although cheap and silly stuff, but still you can buy furnitures there (they might not accept credit card....not too sure)

you mean like one of those things they call a shop

haha.

when you arrive, go to Siam Paragon, Central, Emporium etc.. any large shopping mall. All the appliances you could ever want and more, and of course credit cards can be used for the purchase. They will deliver too.

OP, have you been to Thailand yet? :o

Absolutely key to this issue, and it sounds like you haven't and/or haven't researched it completely. Yes, appliances may be more cheaper in the UK that here, but... you have to add in the cost of shipping and paying duties at the port. The will end up being probably twice what buying in country would be. And, just as important as the original cost, your UK model would not be same as the Thailand model and, therefore, may not be repairable. You will have no new item warranty.

hi thx the replies, even if some were to make the posters feel more important about themselves..

please excuse the typo in the OP - the house is built, its just needs furnishing and appliances. it probably wasnt the clearest text so excuse me please for any confusion.

yes i have been to thailand before , yes i know there are lots of malls, good quality shops etc. however i dont want to ars3 around from shop to shop, picking and choosing - good furniture yes, but i'd rather buy the appliances in 1 large order and then transport them myself. preferably having the order finished and just ready to collect upon arrival (tight time scale).

i like the style of powerbuy, i havent as yet seen how to pay with cc on the website, so prehaps i'll just pick the stuff out and order when i get there.

thanks again for the answers

Really?

Your first post gave the impression that you hadn't been to the LoS.

Your next post smacks of Home Counties arrogance.

My apologies to the nicer HC residents. :D

I foresee problems for you with your attitude in Thailand.

What fun you will have at Thai Customs. :o for starters!

Are you for real?. I very much doubt it.

You reckon to spend time in the uk assembling a whole lod of household items and ship them to a country which has easier shopping than Europe.

a) pay through the nose + vat

:D pay for a container

Nice one Denno.

You reckon to spend time shopping around the UK, pay for a container and shipping agent, spend time negotiating in the Thai customs, arrange transport from the port to your house.

Wow!

Compaired to popping along to a homepro or similar, spend an hour picking out goods. Going home and sitting back with a beer whilst it is all carried and installed in your house. If the order is big they will probably beat you home.

I definately missed something in the plot.

Happy landings an success to your new home.

before I came over here I had all my furnitures and so on I paid AUD$ 1100 to get it shipped over here

which was pretty cheap I guess but if you don't have any I guess you would be better of buying them over here, there are not expensive plus you don't have to modifify all electrical appliances, such as plugs and so on and you will get your warranty over here.

Maybe you also need to check if you are allowed to import household items into the country. Last time I checked a Work Permit was necessary and you had six months from first entry to import. Ask your shipping agent or the Thai Embassy before you buy anything.

Some more websites of Bangkok appliance dealers for you to check out.

If you're upcountry then go to your nearest Powerbuy, HomePro, Tesco or Big C. There's generally not much difference in price from shop to shop, main thing to lookout for is any bonus buys e.g. buy a fridge and maybe get a free tv thrown in if you're lucky. In HomePro if you go in there and tell them you have a big order and you want to get in and out of the shop as quick as possible then unless it's the weekend you're going to have staff coming from everywhere to help you. Someone mentioned it before and it's true, chances are if you're not home quick then the delivery truck will be waiting for you when you get home. :D

Some places like Powerbuy can have member type cards so if you spend a lot of money you can get a discount or something free based on points accumulated for purchases. Might be an idea to advise your credit card company in advance if you will be making some big purchases in case they block your card when they see a big charge coming through from Thailand.

If you haven't already worked it out, bringing in furniture or large appliances from overseas is not the way to go.:o

thx for the replies folks...

special helmet award goes to gungadin, jeez dude, you need to lay off the drugs..

let me recap - i'll use the special format for the people who are obviously bandwagonning from other peoples posts,

1 , i'm furnishing a small home with appliances electronic goods.

2 i want(ed) to ORDER them FROM the UK and COLLECT them in THAILAND

3 i would prefer to buy them from one business because i'm lazy and pushed for time and dont want to mess around collecting and organising

4 i would like some help with suggestions for the said business (as i dont have much experience and maybe missing a more suitable one)

number 4 has been answered so far any other suggestions very welcome.

crazy talk about my arrogance, thai customs , home counties (<deleted> does that crap actually mean?!? ) is not really neccessary but i'm getting warmed up for it, if you must flame and so badly misunderstand.

p.s. try actually understanding the meaning before your crazy impulses take control

thanks again for the constructive replies suggestions

this was always the plan...

however i can see from the grammar in my second post how it could have been confusing -

"transport the myself" + "ready to collect upon arrival" = collect 1 large order (from the shop in Thailand) and transport it to my home (in Thailand)

apologies for the crap grammar

That's ok, I didn't realise that you were a Scouser! Wirral.... same-same :o

Avoid buying things like furniture from small fly by night operators. When buying furniture online one need to ask whether paying for the model of furniture ordered and received the same. Many stores window dress the furniture and only ship the basics.Be sure of investing in buying only reputed brands.
