This important late-breaking news item was getting buried in a much older thread. Thought it deserved better visibility.

We who live in Isaan are pretty concerned about the tensions at our borders. Hope it didn't hurt to make one extra click. Thanks for your understanding. :o

Well done, Toptuan, because I surely would not have looked in the old thread. My children and grandchildren live in Brownsville, Texas, near a national park service exhibit that clearly shows that the entire region south of the Nueces river was in Mexico in 1846. Yet the Mexican-American war was begun after a general, and future president, went 200 km into Mexico and had a small skirmish. That incited the hotheads in the US Congress to declare war on Mexico, and US troops proceeded all the way to Mexico City. The excuse was given by a US congressman who delcared, "American blood has been spilled on American soil" - a damned lie. In fact, US Marines ever since have sung their war hymn to their war god, "...to the halls of Montezuma..."

So, whose blood got spilled in which country, by whose soldiers? And was it enough blood to justify a war?

So include it in the Isaan forum.

Thanks for bringing this up as it has an impact on all visitors to Thailand. People get skittish when things go boom, even if in the boonies. Many of us know people from the area. Someone considering a visit, has now at least been cautioned and perhaps a life saved or heartache avoided, as these things can take on a life of their own Its not something that the ToT will discuss near high season.

Reading the article, it seems that some idiot wanted to retaliate in a cowardly fashion. Most likely (fortunately) an NCO or officer was around to tell the boys to stop. Wonder if it is time to deploy UN blue hats to keep the peace or at least be there to keep things calm.
