Drug Smugglers Foiled: Thai Police Arrest Laotian with 400K Meth Pills
Picture courtesy of KhaoSod In a dramatic early morning operation on February 23, police in Thailand's Chanuman district foiled a major drug trafficking attempt, capturing one Laotian suspect and seizing 400,000 methamphetamine pills. The operation, led by Police Lieutenant Komsan Kamwan, was triggered by a tip-off about smugglers targeting Ban Si Sombun in Amnat Charoen province. From the break of dawn until 8 a.m., authorities watched as a long-tail boat from Laos drifted towards the Thai shore. As the boat reached land, two men disembarked with fertilizer sacks, which actually contained drugs, while the boat driver stayed onboard. The suspects were intercepted as they walked through sugarcane fields towards the Si Sombun–Na Sida road, aiming to stash the pills in roadside bushes. When confronted by police, the suspects abandoned the sacks and attempted to flee. One suspect fired a gun toward officers to cover their escape, but while the gunfire missed, it allowed him and the boat driver to make a getaway back across the Mekong River. Despite the chaos, police managed to apprehend one suspect, Thao Noi, a Laotian national with no recorded surname. The methamphetamine pills were seized and the suspect was taken into custody for questioning. Charges against Thao Noi include resisting arrest, illegal drug importation, drug trafficking, drug consumption, and illegal entry into Thailand. Authorities are continuing their investigations and legal proceedings, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-24 -
