No coup: Army spokesman

BANGKOK: -- The military remains firm on the stand for political noninterference, Army spokesman Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnoed said Tuesday, ruling out speculation that the soldiers might intervene and seize power.

"The coup won't solve the political problem," he said, quoting earlier remarks by Army chief General Anupong Paochinda.

Anupong and top military commanders made it explicitly clear that they had no thoughts for power grabbing, Sansern said.

I guess when coup d' etats seem to occur every other year or so, I guess one cannot feel ashamed to ask a military official such a stupid question as "will there be a coup?".

Could you imagine a reporter asking SECDEF Robert Gates if there are any plans to hold a coup in the US should Barrack Obama win the upcoming presidential election.

Only in Thailand do the Thais make it so easy to poke fun at their society. When will this country mature?

I think it would have have been funny if the clown, err colonel, had replied that no, there will not be a coup this week; it would create a scheduling conflict with other matters of the state. But don't despair, there is always next week! :o

The more i hear about this repeated 'no coup' thing ... well the more i believe it will happen ... Coup are (almost) a way of life here ... :o

Off-topic ... but reminds me of the constant 'no devaluation' of Chavalit ....

At this point most Thai's seem to see coups, as just another mechanism,

to repair the politicians messes. Just another tool in the road to democracy.

It clears out the wanke_rs for a spell and they take another shot at getting it right.

I know, I know, it SEEMS madness to us in the West, but we aren't Thai are we?

I think the ancient kow tow thing has a lot to do with it,

it has always been difficult to talk back or talk down the powerful,

and only a more powerful entity can bring them down when they run amuk.

Clearly they are running amuk again, but now the courts

are finally finding a set of legal balls and are slowly bringing down the

wanke_rs. It may not be fast enough considering the crew in there now

wants to rewrite the laws fast.

Do they not realize that trying that is the surest way to another coup?

Thaksin was moving towards marshal law and total control, at the same time

he was getting more and more VISIBLY arogant AND paranoid. Unstable.

I think that is why the army moved in 2006, he was looking very unstable.

Right now the government looks like it is NOT in control,

but at least not losing it mentally, just a bit bewildered about what to do.

Not the same level of risk from the army viewpoint.

The Hun Sen moves are troubling, but a typical distraction also.

But if they go in to jigger the constitution again, all bets are off.

They could are saying that for any number of reasons including that there won't be, because there will be or because they are expecting another outcome soon.

Good idea....Maybe the Army sees some court ruling soon. If they stage a coup everyone would doubt that the court ruling is fair.

So better wait unless PPP changes the constitution.
