I think it is a smidgen easier to obtain that than Thai citizenship, which is necessary to obtain a Thai ID card.

what you heard is plain wrong.

How about......a hospital ID card, or the visa run stamps.......

Or your passport which is a foreigner's ID in Thailand. :o As mentioned, unless you have Thai citizenship you can not get the standard Thai citizen ID card. So, a Thai DL or in my case I have an university photo ID card that looks impressive. :D

How about dropping the odd Tinglish phrase into your conversations back home: 'You think to mut' - 'Same same friend from me' - 'where you go?' or perhaps 'Me have big problem too much'

You'll not need a Thai ID - folks will get the idea for themselves.

What you would need would be a Tabien Ban - but since this is in Thai, it would be useless to your friends and you would not be able to use it as proof of your being an expatriate.

If you as a foreigner acquire thai citizenship, then you'll get a thai national id card.

I always find that hand writing notes, memos etc... in thai script gets a few funny looks too.
