What is the best format to use when you want to burn a dvd ?

My odd files need to be convert

Encode in AVI ? MPEG ? WMV ? OTHER ?

After, I will use nero.

Ya Im interested too, I go for quality and try to convert say... cam corder videos to AVI and get a large 12 gig file... that still looks grainy and crappy.... what is it I dont know?
