Name The Star You Want To See Live In Phuket

The Phuket Brewery opens on November 21 on the Bypass with seating at tables for 2000 guests, and a large stage that can accommodate international performers. Carabao, the great Thai band, is the headline opening act with the promise of more stars to come regularly.

Who do you want to see live on Phuket?

Here's one suggested list: Loso! Carabao again. Madonna on the slide, any great alternative rock band, especially the White Stripes. Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones seriously reborn from 1970, and with Tata Young singing lead vocals, No Doubt, Fergie and the Black Eyed Peas (all other rappers/hip hoppers should be banned because it's sooo boooring) Joan Baez, Nina Simone with a little help from science, Mazzy Starr, Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, kd laing twice, Jet, Outkast, Alicia Keys, Aretha Franklin, the B-52s, Ben Harper, Bjork, Blondie, Blur, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Coldplay, the Corrs, Eskimo Joe, George Benson, Green Day, Foo Fighters, John Butler Trio, Joni Mitchell, Lilly Allen, Mary J. Blige, Metallica, Milli Vanilli, Nelly Futado, Oasis, Okkervill River, PJ Harvey, Powderfinger, Red Hot Chili Peppers (ped ped ped), Simply Red, Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins, the Strokes, Thom Yorke, Tracy Chapman, and most of all . . . Jack Johnson singing duet with Bob Marley.

Look, just because someone with a boatload of cash builds a blues venue in the worst part of town does not mean it will be host to all the acts you mentioned.

Everytime I read your posts, I hear that sound. The sound the director "The Right Stuff" made when reporters showed up.

If you are trying to start hype about the place, you are much better off having it screamed loud from the Speaker Trucks.

Thai music is best played as loud as the volume will go. As we all know, Thai's beleive it is better loud as he]].

You must have been given some free tickets to generate the hype, yes?

This reminds me of the Big Oktober Fest Beer Garden that was built on a land slide. Did they ever get to capacity?

Phuket isn't ready for a blues venue that seats 2000. It is, however, ready for a Senior's Bingo Parlor, Early Bird Buffet Specials, and Gambling Casino's.

Where are you going to park peoples cars? That is the major problem here. Everyone seems to think that everyone is here for the cheap lifestyle. I like to drive my truck, as do my friends. If I can't park, I ain't going.

All this money, and all these dumb ideas. I love living here!

More on Phuket Wan.

Gary Glitter and the Glitter-band.

Should be lively.........

You took the words right out of my mouth......think Gary would feel right at home in Phuket.

I saw him on one of his Christmas concerts in 1997 at Shepton Mallet...a great night but toooooo loud for me.

Ah Todd . . . are you another total cynic who only reads what his warped train of thought writes between the lines?

Sorry, no free tickets. Phuketwan tries to avoid freebies. We just know the genuine goods when we actually go to have a look.

You should try that some time . . .

By the way, the block between Tesco and Central is reasonably popular, because the island has moved on.

Your universe seems to be a little small.

Most of us are over the tired Gary Glitter stuff. You still find it funny, huh?

Where would the parking be for the 2000 attendees?  Would the venue be running a shuttle to some remote parking lot?  Certainly there is not parking for this type of crowd and many people these days do travel by car.  I know if there is no parking, I'm not going, so on that note I sure am glad Junceylon came along as parking in Patong was hel_l before that.

Bring in; Rancid, Social Distortion, jello Biafra and the Dead Kennedys if they are still alive, Butthole Surfers, Misfits, Germs. Nothing says fun like a mosh pit. Now that's sick what with all the elderly folk getting battered and jostled - dentures would be flying for sure. I'll dust off my Docs for the event. :o

Convince Eminem to come out of retirement with a promise of girls with alot of junk in the trunk. Maybe you can get the Beastie Boys if you play the Buddist card.

However, something tells me all you will draw are the castoffs from Carnival Cruises tribute to the Carpenters, Captain & Tenille show.

Cynic? Me? My friends call me a CronicCynic. I should change my Thai Visa login id name to croniccynic, for alan.

As far as the Gary Glitter is concerned, I am American. I wasn't raised with it, know him well, nor did I know what he looked like until I Goog'ed him.

Umm yes, I have been there and seen the enormous undertaking. (A boat? Seriously? Reminds me of a Guy who did a 90 ft. Saxophone in Houston, and another who made one out of a retired CIA plane in Quepos, Costa Rica) I remember a really nice built, fancy club in your universal metropolis area that is so fastly growing. Prantha, or Pyrantha, across from Zen at Central? Everyone has walked by, but with all that booming growth alan speaks of, how could this be? How could they not get any business? :o

I don't have a Universe, and my world is very small. But I am sure I will be fine.

There is nothing more liberating than being uninformed!

thanks :D

Now i know what it is, i was already wondering because a real brewery was not very likely.

But as already mentioned if there is no decent parking place the place will be going tits up very soon.

Just look at the Big Oktober Fest Beer Garden which was build just outside Patong !!!

this was a decent place at a good location but also to big and to limited in choice to fill. One German performance e year was enough for most people.

The tuk tuk drivers will be very happy with this new place so they can charge what ever they want to bring the people if the don't have transport. ( like 99 % of the tourist )

Does anybody knows what the entrance price will be and if they have double pricing like at so many places. :D

Or at least discount for locals. :o

Lots of parking out the back . . . a huge space for several hundred cars and motorcycles.

These people are professionals. There are 180 full-time staff . . . including musicians.

I don't think comparisons with the Oktober Fest are appropriate. . . The boutique brewery is a small part of the Bypass Road operation, although I guess it's as good a name as any.

And the boat . . . well, these people also own the Dairy Hut in Samkong and there's a cow out the front.

I wouldn't want to speak too soon but a lot of money has been spent on a first-class venue. The performers will be mostly Thai to begin with but that's likely to broaden quickly.

Nothing second-rate about this operation. Sure, it has a lot to prove . . . but they seem to have everything in place to succeed.

(Thanks for the explanation, Todd!)

Means nothing in Thailand we can give many axamples of places with a lot of staff and still runs like shit. :o

But the Oktober Fest was set up by german people which knowledge of german partys and real food but they also went bankrupt for whatever reason.

You say it already, mostly Thai that means that most farang are not much interested and the Thai will refuse to pay a lot of entrance fee and pay inside properly high European prices. Hopefully they start with international orientated entertainment or it will be a waste of time and money.

Nothing second-rate about this operation. Sure, it has a lot to prove . . . but they seem to have everything in place to succeed.

Don't understand me wrong but in my experience it will be very difficult for them to run a succesful place in that area where the most of the people will come more then one time to check it out. In the end it is not a shopping centre or grocery store but a alcohol drinking entertainment place far away from all the tourist places. :D

Well I guess you want to close it before it opens, right?

I fail to see why there is such negativity about a project that has been well planned and looks the kind of venue that the island needs.

As for location, it's right where the customers are . . . between Central, HomeWorks and Tesco-Lotus, along from Big C. Er, people do shop a little, you know.

It's well placed for people coming from Patong, coming from Rawai and the south, coming from the North, and especially for the largest population centre, Phuket City.

I don't think they will have any problems making it work, provided they get good acts.

The concentration is on the food, not the beer. And they have proved with Dairy Hut that they do that well.

I am not part of their marketing team, but I'd be surprised if they didn't have minivans to cater for groups.

Inside, it looks terrific. Outside, there's space for hundreds of vehicles.

None of the criticisms so far stand up to scrutiny.

The Oktoberfest failed because of the name. It's like calling your bar 'Come and Have A Drink Here Every December.'

I am afraid German ingenuity does not work every time.

Once a year is as often as most people really care to fall about full, and the Oktoberfest was pitched at a small segment of the foreign population.

I could have told them that.

This place is totally different.

A large venue that aims at Thais primarily and also caters for farang has a chance.

And while I love a good sausage, Thai food is a little bit more popular here.

Agree with you Alan! I'm willing to defer passing judgement until they've been up and running for a few months.

I have to believe that they've done their research and put together a solid business plan before investing that kind of money. I doubt that any of us knows for sure what their target demographic is - locals, expats or tourists. Given their initial band bookings, it appears that they're focusing on locals at the start, and then possibly moving toward a mix. It seems to me that with Thai bands playing regularly, this would be a nice place for those expats with Thai spouses to have an occasional night out, along with the locals. I wish them success.

Seriously, the likes of Coldplay, Eagles, etc etc are not going to play for 2000 people. But surely a Blues Fest or Jazz Fest with some minor "stars" would be good - and I would've thought feasible especially if you tag on to one of the other Fests in the region. Does the Bangkok Jazz Festival still operate? I know they have Jazz fests in Kuala Lumpur. They used to do a jazz/bluesy week in Singapore at the Durians (Esplanade) and that venue can't be any more than 2000 people I would've thought.

Also agree with Alan. Lets see how the place goes before slamming it.

Jazz fest now you're talking. Been to the Bangkok and Hua Hin festivals a few times. The Hua Hin beach stage and bar is a blast.

I dont think this new beer factory is the place to hold a jazz festival though. I reckon a concept like Hua Hin's on the beach would be great here and attract a lot more international stars than Hua Hin.

Anyway my mrs is looking forward to going to the beer factory when it opens as I guess are some others. Hopefully we will be able to post some good experiences.

Off topic (sorry!) but is there an official website for the Hua Hin Jazz Fest? I've done a google but can't find any "official" one.
