Foreigners Over 60 To Be Banned From Moving To Uk Simply For Retirement

Foreigners will be banned from moving to Britain to retire, it has emerged.

The Home Office is scrapping rules that allow non-EU pensioners who have sufficient money to look after themselves to move to the UK after they have stopped working.

Officials said the policy did not fit in with the idea of 'earned citizenship'.

But it will raise concerns that countries whose citizens will lose out could retaliate by imposing similar restrictions of their own.

This could see older Britons denied the chance to move overseas to non-EU countries, which could affect thousands every year.

Thousands leave every year for New Zealand, Australia and America.

The current route into Britain is known as Retired Persons of Independent Means.

It applies to those who are aged 60 or over, have a net disposable income of at least £25,000 a year, can demonstrate a close connection with the UK, intend to make the UK their home and are able to maintain and accommodate themselves and any dependants without needing public funds.

They are not required to have worked or paid taxes in the UK but have free access to healthcare on arrival and full access to the benefit system after five years.

After five years, they are also entitled to apply for settlement and a British passport.

The Home Office admitted it had received a large number of objections to the idea, but had decided to press ahead.

Papers issued by officials say: 'It is difficult to reconcile the existence and entitlements of this route with the Government’s conviction that citizenship should be earned and that migrants must demonstrate certain requirements in order to progress on their journey.

Although the migrants need to be self sufficient, the amount of disposable income that these migrants must demonstrate may not match the demands they may place on public services.'

Thousands of Britons will still be able to retire in Spain each year. The rules do not apply to EU citizens, so there is no risk of countries such as Spain - where thousands of Britons retire to every year - putting in place reciprocal arrangements.

The Home Office also confirmed the age for obtaining a marriage visa to enter the UK is to be raised from 18 to 21 in an effort to crack down on people being forced into relationships.

The change to the immigration rules will come into force on November 27, this month and will mean both the intended husband and wife will have to be 21 before a marriage visa can be issued.

Immigration Minister Phil Woolas said the Government had a 'firm conviction that no-one should be pressurised into sponsoring a marriage visa'. To avoid breaching equality laws, the age for civil partnerships will also be raised to 21.

Shadow Home Secretary Dominic Grieve said: 'We welcome the reannouncement of the proposals on raising the age limit for marrying from abroad and the announcement on declaring intention to marry - they are our policies.

'But the government is still failing to address the crucial issue in this area. Will they now adopt our policy of having an annual limit on non-EU immigration?'

Only the mentally insane would want to retire to the UK.

It is just another ploy by the government trying to look tough on a failed immigration system they have in place. This will no doubt fail thanks to Tony Blairs Human Rights Charter he made law.

Anybody wishing could simply claim it was against their human rights and would be granted retiree status.

The numbers of non EU people wishing to retire in the UK must be minimal by anybodies standards, so it will have no real impact or meaning to most people.

Anyway, us oldies retiring in Thailand on retirement visas are not technically migrating to Thailand. We are on NON-immigrant visas. They are for one year only. Our status does not improve over the years and there is no path towards resident status. So, again, I don't see any connection at all between this British change and Thailand visas.

Hope they keep the hideous cherrie there when she retires. Imagine having all that money and power and marrying someone who was less attractive than their dad!

My dig at the Blair Witch is that she drove most of the more politically correct policies through in the bedroom.

So she could fight the government on the laws her husband brought in to power, and win. Hence earning hundreds of thousands of pounds from the government.

It is commonly known as a conflict of interests or FRAUD.

Pity the police missed that one.

She is even more hideous in 'real life' Pops. I met her once in 10 Downing Street.

The thought of that smile will remain with me always. :o

However many over 60s there are in the fascist superstate that is the EU have full rights to retire to the UK.

In total 600 million EU citizens have full rights to move to England and have free use of schooling, healthcare, solicitors, claim social security and get free housing.

Anyway its good to see common sense prevailing and NuLiebour are finally stopping the masses of Non EU over 60s coming to the UK, i can only see the UK prospering with laws such as this.
