Mae Hong Son steps up border security

MAE HONG SON: -- Mae Hong Son Governor Suphot Laowansiri today ordered a tightening of security forces on the Thai-Myanmar border in anticipation of dry season offensives by the Myanmar military and minority forces fighting the Yangon regime.

Mae Hong Son, which shares a 240-kilometre border with Myanmar, is often affected by military action across the border.

Mr. Suphot said that the province had drawn up contingency plans to evacuate residents from the border area.

Nonetheless, he stressed relations between the two countries at local level had considerably improved, and that while security forces were on 24-hour alert, there were unlikely to be any major problems.
