Can Anyone Recommend A Good Free Network/bandwidth Logger?

Featured Replies

can anyone recommend a good free network/bandwidth logger? I want to complain to my isp about their crap speed as of late.

Something simple that can run in the background and say take a snap shot every 5 min (or customizable time interval)

and out put to a text log or excel doc my time stamp, ip, dl and upld speed.

My ADSL best ever ping on speedtest.net was about 3600mbps, now for the past 4 days it's barely been over 200 and that's just testing to BKK servers.

sounds like you forgot to pay the previous bill.

MRTG

it's freeware, works with snmp (which your router probably supports), but... you'll have to read to manual.

After getting it up and running, it checks a device every 5 minutes and graphs the output in a png file.

Runs best on unix (perl), is CLI based (no GUI!) and it's the most used graphing tool worldwide.

My ADSL best ever ping on speedtest.net was about 3600mbps, .

thats some big packets you're using there :o

are you testing to local servers when using speedtest.net ?

I have noticed True upload speeds are about 1/10th what is supposed to be there lately , but the D/load speed seeds to be within spec.

yes that was the speedtest.net test to BKK from Phuket (personal best ever) the other test that I run frequently is the test to SF California and i usually get 1,500+kbps to there or at least 512

Update to my search

Two friends keyed me into to different solutions.

One is to go to www.dslreports.com and go to tools. Wow there's a mother load of tools there!

the other solution a friend sent me was to go and download a network logger here

http://www.paessler.com/prtg7/download

PRTG Network Monitor

I'll try these two out before I go hacking my router :o

Maybe this info can help out other users as well
