i have read on here that she leaves the usa and gets stamped at lax, lets say she lands in japan, does she still use usa passport, when she lands in thailand, she uses thai passport? and on the way back?

But yes she should use her US passport in any country that is not S.E.Asia

Being a naturalized U.S. citizen myself I would agree with JD. Make sure she brings her citizenship papers. The U.S. immigration authority will asked to see it (always).

The US does not do exit stamps. She will show her US passport at check in at LAX. If she does not have a return ticket within 30 days to the US and they ask her about entering Thailand, show the Thai passport. If she is going to enter Japan on the way too Thailand, she would enter and exit on US passport. If it just a stopover at Narita, she will not go through Japan immigration.

On entering Thailand she uses Thai passport.

When she leaves Thailand, show both Thai and US passports to check-in so they will allow her to board without visa in her Thai passport. At immigration, show only the Thai passport, they do not care if she can enter the US or not.

On arrival in US, use US passport. They don’t care if there is an exit stamp from Thailand.

looks like my wife will go through maybe taipei, cheaper right now on china airlines, she will have a 1 way ticket to thailand, she leaves lax on usa passport, if asked she will show thai passport, is this ok to have 2 different passports ? she should not say she will get a return ticket in thailand ? gets into taipei and also shows her usa passport in and out ? and then will land in bangkok and use her thai passport, is this right, don't want to get it wrong.. thank you

No problem with having 2 passports (just so long as they are for the same name etc) many of us have them. I assume she will not be leaving the international terminal in Taipei so she won't be showing any passport there

yes both are in the same name, i don't know, but i would think, leaving taipei i would think she would be leaving international airport, if its better to enter and leave japan, then will book that what do you think. thanks

huh? Assuming she is coming to Thailand and not vacationing in Taiwan (or Japan or Kurdistan etc etc etc) She will likely just get off the plane in Taiwan and either get back on the same one or a different one. Have you never flown internationally?

ok just looked at both passports, the thai passport has my last name since we were married in thailand in 2005, she did not want to change her last name, but, thailand changed it to my last name when we registered, at the ampur and she applied for a new passport and it was in my last name, now when she just became a citizen of usa, everything was in her ex husbands last name, so she keep her same last name and did the usa passport in her ex-husbands last name, what does she have to do , now to get a ticket ? thanks

If it's a one-way ticket from the US to Thailand, just use the Thai passport all the way. Use the same name for the airline ticket. We've been there, done that and got the t-shirt!

that's what i told her, but will have trouble coming back if stamp not in passport, how is everyone using 2 different passports, doesn't the stamp have to be in the usa passport, i know her friends say to do this but, what about coming back and no stamps from thailand in her usa passport, even if i change here usa passport, where are the stamps in usa from thailand they would be in her usa passport, i know they are in mine, or does it not matter and she should just fly out on her thai passport and come back on her usa passport, this is getting crazy.

jdinasia, are you around ? ok do i amend my wife's american passport, to show my last name like her thai passport ? so both are the same ? since she is now a citizen of the usa ? now if yes, can she then travel to thailand without getting a visa from thai embassy to stay in thailand, more then 1 year on a one way ticket? from the usa to thailand, so how would it go, leaves los angeles on usa passport or thai passport, and what would they say if she uses americain without a visa ? on a one way ticket ? flys into taipei and will show her ( ) passport and boarding pass, on her way from taipei to thailand, lands in thailand and uses her thai passport ? now if this is the way it goes, on the way back, she will use her usa passport ? leaving thailand ? and what will the usa say that she has no stamp from thailand, when she got there a year ago? i sorry i am not understanding all this, makes me nervous.

She needs to get her name changed in her US passport. If her passport is more than a year old she will have to get a new passport.

No problem to fly from US just show her Thai and US passport when checking in for flight in LA.

All she will need her passprot for in Taipei is to confirm her idenity for boarding the flight since she will be in transit.

When she arrives in Bangkok she shows her Thai passport for entry.

When she leaves Thailand she shows her US passport when checking in for her flight to prove she can enter US.

At immigration she shows her Thai passport and they stamp her out of country.

When she arrives in US she goes through the US citizen line and shows her US passport.

yes, thank you, she has had her passport for less then one year and we went down weds. and with the marriage cert..and are in the middle of changing her usa passport to my last name..so both her usa and thai passport will be the same..and she will be able to stay out of the usa and stay in thailand..as long as she wants without any problem coming back? thai embassy said she needs a visa..so she has no trouble getting back in usa..but that does not sound right...?? since she is a natuaralized citizen with a usa passport ? thanks ubonjoe..and lets say taipei she would just show her thai passport..is that right..sorry just getting crazy with this..thanks again

No problem using both passports. I don't think the Thai embassy would be the best source of information concerning US entry requirements.

In Taipei it doesn't matter which passport she shows it will only be for ID when she boards the plane. Taipei should be easy. When she checks in for her flight at LAX they will give her a boarding pass for her connecting flight in Taipei so all she has do is go to the gate for her flight. She will go through security in Taipei and that is all.

US and Thai passport at airport check-in, in Los Angeles, this will show airlines that she does not need a visa on one way ticket. Use the Thai passport on the Thai immigration entry and exit, this way she will not have to have a visa for Thailand. Us passport and Thai passport at airport/airline check-in in Thailand will show that she can travel back to USA without restrictions. Depart Thailand with Thai passport at immigration check point Its that easy..

this sounds crazy to me also, i don't know why she would need a visa to visit thailand, even thou she is also an american now, thai embassy said this way she would have no problem getting back to usa and staying in thailand longer then 30 days, but she is a citizen of usa ,now and i thought thailand still reconize her as a thai national still, also. i read all the time people saying they do this, i even read on columbia, etc. websites, that they do the same thing, 2 passports is ok, no problem. driving me to drink. thanks guys

What? I find it hard to believe that the USA does not care if she does not have an exit stamp from Thailand. I don't have any dual passport experience, but switching passports in flight sure seems like it will gurantee that the average guy behind the counter at LAX will just ask more questions.

Why? He knows what plane you came on before it took off. What does he care about an exit stamp (that the US does not even do)

I can't remember the last time I got an entrance stamp for the US. I think it was sometime back in the 90's.

I fact I can't remember when they even went any further than the photo page when they had it in their hands.

Dual nationals on Thai and USA passports.

Must enter and leave Thailand on their Thai passports - and even if they choose not to and do decide to enter on their USA passports, they cannot use or claim USA citizenship (while in Thailand) for whatever reason e.g. get out of trouble.

Must enter and leave USA on their USA passports - and even if they ...... ditto ditto , ditto ditto....

And while travelling anywhere else? - whatever passport they feel is best to use, though keep in mind when swanning around South Asia, changing passports can present one with a problem: the first thing border entry officials look for is usualy the departure stamp from the previous country - which if you are changing around passports can present you with a problem.

I got something stamped inside my US passport when I arrived in Dallas two years ago from Dept of Homeland Security. First time I ever saw anything like it.

alot of thai nationals who are naturalized citizens must go to thailand and stay for long periods, i can not see the problem with being a dual citizen, i thought thailand and usa allow dual citizens, just not understanding it, has anyone done this ?
