Ricky Hatton may strike it lucky over Thai's plight

Ron Lewis

Should Ricky Hatton become a big promoter when his fighting days are over, he could turn out to be a compassionate one. The first signing to Hatton Promotions, the boxer’s new company, is a former world champion down on his luck, but it could turn out to be a canny acquisition.

Sirimongkol Singwancha, 31, makes his first appearance for the company on tonight’s undercard at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. Singwancha, from Thailand, held the WBC super-featherweight title from 2002 to 2003 but, despite having lost only two of 61 bouts, he finds himself living in poverty.

“He’s living in real poor surroundings,” Hatton said. “It’s terrible for someone who has done as much for the sport as him. Stories like that excite me. For everything he has done, to be treated like he has been is awful. He was a world champion; he’s got a great record. We will give him the opportunity and when it comes along, he has to take it.”

Things got so bad for Singwancha that, to raise cash, he posed for pictures in a gay pornographic magazine, which led to him being given a six-month suspended jail sentence on indecency charges. Hatton was alerted to his plight by Charles Atkinson, the British boxing coach who has taught a string of Thai champions and sent tapes of Singwancha in action.

“I’ve seen tapes of him, but the first time I saw him in the gym, he had just come off a 26-hour flight,” Hatton said. “He looks good. I do feel sorry for him. He’s got a 59-2 record and hasn’t got two ha’pennies to rub together. It’s a great shame. We call him ‘Ho’ – we can’t even begin to pronounce his name.

“After all the years of him being ripped off and messed about, if we can get him to a title shot and get him some decent fights, maybe we can get him a nice house paid for and a few quid in the bank. He’s a world-class operator who has been treated badly.”

Unusual story, really hope it works for him, no doubt Hatton will get the crowd going "Ho Ho Ho" as he gets into the ring...

Just look at Don King to see where most of the money in boxing goes. Boxers often get little from the purse.

Thats why I hope he gets a little luck this time. Hatton's a boxer and I doubt that anyone who knows this mans character would think for one moment Ho will get ripped off this time.

Don King is the greatest promoter in boxing history.

He is a businessman you cant blame him for some Thai boxing blowing his money.

I see nothing in the article that suggests he blew his money only that he was ripped off, a common occurrence in the boxing world despite your adulation for Don King.

No one is blaming Don King, he is the same league as a pimp who are also good businessmen, but the system doesn't outlaw boxing promotors.

In Thailand success, or failure, has absolutely nothing to do with ability unless you happen to get born right....

Moo-wash, ...although undoubtedly for many, it helps.

Yes nothing in the article says he blew his money, but he has none after 60 odd fights, so i put 2 and 2 together, but maybe he ate it.

Don King is a murdering, thieving, lying, throughly vile man, but i am a boxing fan and he has put together the greatest fights ever, and is without doubt the greatest boxing promoter ever, please dispute this if you wish.

Calzaghe Jones didnt have a promoter last week, they also couldnt sell out Madison square Garden and had p7ss poor Payperview sales, Don King could have made them more money which is what pro boxing is all about.

Naseem Hamed made 10s of millions fighting people my gran could go 12 rounds with, this was down to his promoter, though i do think Frank Warren overprotects his fighters.

Good on Ricky Hatton for helping him out though, and also to Lou Di Bella for making Malignaggi who is an average fighter a good pay packet last night.

Oh won according to this.

There are local fighters (with piss poor roots) who have reinvested even their meager local winnings and in some cases Olympic "bonuses" and have built comfortable lives... most however do not. That's pretty much the trend for the majority of people everywhere.

Agree with you 100% and disagree with the title of this thread 1,000%.

The UK was quite right to cancel the man's visa. He is 'down on his luck' due to his own selfishness and greed and I for one hope he rots in jail where he, er,...........whoops, sorry!

Must have been thinking about another Thai man!
