Hi, I want to get my Thai friend a present but I thought it'd be better if I wrote on it in Thai. My friend is called Nichakarn but everyone calls her "Ni". Is there a way of writing her name (preferably the shortened version) in Thai?

Also, are there any Thai phrases for "happy holidays" or "best wishes", or something along those lines?

I have a book for choosing names for babies and never find the name I want, today is no exception. Only one name similar something like นิชาภันท์ which I assume would be shortened นิ which is not very 'meaty' Why not be honest and write 'Ni'? My contribution for the kit you need is: ขอให้คุณ I wish you ความสุกสบาย health and happiness ในเวลา วันหยุด for your holiday, If she is travelling เดินทางอย่างปลอดภัย a safe journey; and, this I have only heard as a pleased to meet you from English but since you want to give a present I am sure it applies ยินดีที่ได้รู้จักคุณ happy to know you. Then there is โชกดี good luck used as you would expect. Put that together and you will sound like someone trying to learn Thai. You get control of the text ie. enlarge etc.when you hit reply.

From your enquiried I think it is a very good idea and can make your Thai friend surprise if you can try to write the message in Thai. Thai people have long name so mostly we have short name that might call "nick name" But nick name or short name can cut from first or last word from the full name or totally different. Example full name is "Panthip" nick name is "Thip" or "Wanwipa" nick name is "Nok" that is depends on person who prefer to use the nick name for others call them.

Thai phrases for "Happy Holidays" is "suk-san-wan-yut" " สุขสันต์วันหยุด" explaination : suk-san means "Happy" and wan-yut means "Holiday"

For the phrases "Best wishes" normally we do not translate exactly as in English but we could say "Goodluck" or "chock-dee" or "โชคดี" We also have another word like "kor-hai mee kwaam-suk maak-maak" means "wish you have a very happy"

You may make a sentense for wishing also and if you are not sure in Thai. We can discuss more about it.
