Been living on Samui for five years and love it. Have gotten used to most business practices in Thailand and always blame myself when I make a mistake - which I do quite regularly.

With a fairly recent one however I'd like to get some advice.

2 years ago I bought a leather couch at Index Living Mall in Phuket. The regular price was 59000.00 baht and I got it for 40 % off, at 35400.00 baht. It's been sitting, without being used much in it's allotted spot, inside my house, of course.

A couple of months ago it started to peel like an unwary farang who's been exposed to too much sun. And yes, the peel (dark brown and awfully thin, not much thicker than human skin) doesn't look much like any leather I ever saw.

Consequently I had a Thai friend (knowing and accepting my limitations in achieving any kind of success in business negotiations hereabouts) call Index in Phuket. We were told to fax receipt and pictures of the couch, which we did.

Index’s offer in response was that I could have, for a mere 5000.00 baht, get the dam_n thing reupholstered, with some different kind of leather, apparently quite unlike the one I had purchased and liked in the first place.

Anybody with any ideas as to whether I just have to grin and bear it, or if there are any other options? (E.g. writing to the head office or whatever)

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

You have been had.

Real leather does not peel. It sounds like you have a plastic imitation. These people are so good at imitating leather that it will feel like & smell like leather...but it isn't.

There is only one test that can reveal the truth...the cut test. If you cut into something you think is leather, it will be obvious if it is or isn't leather. Of course, this only applies if you know what real leather looks like & feels like.

Actually I knew I've been had. But Index 'living mall' is a very large chain, and I was wondering if there is any place I can go to make them care. Or will any letter to the Bangkok Post etc. be just a waste of my time and effort. If I was dealing with a small Index retailer I would have donated the couch already. But this is a very big retailer, and my receipt states clearly: leather couch. Any and all ideas welcome.
