In the grounds of Pattaya City Hall on Saturday morning, Khun Itipon, the Mayor, as well as former mayor and now adviser Khun Niran, and a brace of local government officials and employees celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the raising of Pattaya to city status by the central government.

The officials stood in front of the statue of King Thaksin the Great and after a few moments contemplation began filing up to place incense sticks before the statue.

Pattaya had begun developing in the early 1960s as a tourist resort and on the 29th of November 1978 the military government of General Kriangsak Chomanan granted it city status.

Naturally, this day is celebrated every year. From a distance a passing pedestrian might have thought the place was on fire with the amount of smoke generated by all the incense sticks, but officials were determined to make a real show, this being the city’s 30th anniversary.
