Cupping Therapy For Lower Back Pain

I read that Chinese Cupping Therapy is normally practiced by acupuncturists. You may find your therapist faster by seeking out and screening acupuncturists. I believe the treatment is safe and not uncomfortable, and can provide relief but certainly no permanent solution, particularly if your pain is caused by nerve impingement/disk herniation or stenosis. Other than this, I am a neophyte and have no personal experience with the technique.

Skyman Thanks for the advice , I will look into it. I think my lower back pain is due to the way i sit or standing up for very long time

Then you should address those causes of the problem before throwing money at half-baked needle jockey (IMHO).

Maybe the problem is that you are not putting the same weight on both legs when you stand. This can cause misalignment of your pelvis which can be corrected with a few simple exercises. If you pelvis is not correct it can cause all sorts of problems for your back and legs joints.

I've had it many times as it is a standard home remedy in Cambodia. Basically works in the same way as massage: releases endorphins and relaxes tight muscles. And, like massage, the relief is temporary.

While you probably can find someone doing this, it's a lot easier to simply find a good masseuse, Lying flat on your back on the floor with a heating pad also helps. But these are all just for termporary relief.

A course of physical therapy might actually help correct the root of the problem, and leave you with some exercises to continue on a regular basis.

I was going to physio for nech and shoulder pain (computer related RSI)

after several sessions of physio...she did the cupping thing once...but I had a terrible reaction....had red rashes for 2 days, and was terribly painful. the physio claims this is normal reaction from the tight muscles I have....but I certainly wouldnt be trying it

(in fact she didnt tell me she was going to try a different method..nor did she warn me of the reactions...and hence when I saw the marks, was very shocked and worried by it. didnt help that I developed a fever as a result!)

while on that subject - Sheryl, and anyone else.....?

Ive been having RSI for many many months, have been to several physio sessions, now switching to acupuncture...but none of it seems to be helping.

the pain starts in my shoulder blade and my wrist, and gets worse and moves to lower back and neck.....to the point that I developed muscle spasm at base of neck.

have had workstation re arranged. at a loss as to waht to do. only thing that helped was stopped using computer by taking holidays. now am back at work again...and the pain starts ....not as intense as prior to the time off, but its building up.

what can I do? I cant not use a computer in my job...as I do a lot of writing/research

As you are asking for anyone with experience with cupping it seems you don't really understand what it is and the reasons behind its use.

My advise is, before doing anything have a qualified person diagnose what the problem is - stay well away from any massage therapist, osteo, chiro, physio, acupuncturist or witch doctor who doesn't undertake a full and thorough analysis before treatment.

DO NOT TREAT UNDIAGNOSED PROBLEMS.

Do you use the mouse a lot?

One of the main problems with neck, arm and shoulder pain is the use of the mouse, do you have to lift your arm/shoulder to use it, are you over-reaching for the mouse in a forward or side direction?

Your shoulder should be in a relaxed and neutral position - sit at the computor, take some time and critically analyse where your body is in relation to the screen, keyboard and mouse. I have treated many people with similar complaints and have found with a change of body position in relation to mouse/keyboard a change can be brought about.

Going for alternative therapy may or may not benefit. Relaxation of the msucles, improved circulation etc is only tempory and only treats the symptoms, not the cause.

The cause will still lie with muscle weakness and imbalance which can be identifued by a sports physio who specialises in identifying the cause and corrective exercises to CORRECT the condition.

Most cases are quite simple to correct.

I had severe RSI in my right forearm/wrist to the point where I could not lift a cup. I bought a document from Sharon Butler off the web which was a six week program of stretches with accompanying useful advice. The first week you start stretching around the head and neck and gradually work down to the wrist over the following weeks. After three weeks I could feel things easing, after six weeks all my problems had gone and have never returned. Highly recommended.

I agree with Sheryl. I've had cupping therapy in conjunction with acupuncture. It worked well for a few weeks. Lower back pain is definitely one area that a really GOOD Thai masseuse can definitely help with as its what Thai massage was originally all about. Find a masseuse that has completed a 'massage for health' course as well. But you need to go regularly for about 2 months.
