.mht

Featured Replies

I get emails (ok, jokes) from a friend of mine that have attachments with a .mht extension in my hotmail inbox. When I click on the attachment it opens an IE window, but nothing is there.

Anyone else have this problem?

File with extension .mht are archived Web Pages. When you save a Web page as a Web archive in Internet Explorer, the Web page saves this information in Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension HTML (MHTML) format with a .MHT file extension. All relative links in the Web page are remapped and the embedded content is included in the .MHT file. The absolute references or hyperlinks on the Web page remain unchanged and the .MHT file is viewed using Internet Explorer. Note: This file type can become infected and should be carefully scanned if someone sends you a file with this extension.

For to check that files for errors, please go to THIS WEBSITE.

Good luck.

Could it be that hotmail prevents you from opening the file?

ask your friend to mail a test file to your ISP email account (POP3) or if you have one to a g-mail account.

Thanks Reimar,

well I guess that is why I can't access these files.......I don't have IE installed.

Appears you do have, and by default if you have XP/Vista IE is there. You can also try and open it in Microsoft Word if you have it installed. But be sure to scan it for viruses after you save the attachment.

Also since it is a format prone to virus infections, perhaps it is being filtered by the ISP/Hotmail and stripping the data out of it. Not sure why it is being sent as an .mht file in the first place, sounds suspect to me and perhaps a virus payload unwittingly from his end.

OK.....I forwarded the email from my Hotmail account to my Gmail account, when I opened it in Gmail it had a .eml extension. Clicked on that and it opens to show a .wmv extension which will of course play in WMP. So, no problem with Gmail.

The other thing is, in the Hotmail account there is only this .mht link in the email and when you click on it it has to download the file, in the Gmail situation it has already downloaded it as the mail is coming in.

Hotmail (MS) :o:D they are Apple's best source of promotion.
