I have just checked out Air Asias new venture in to Europe i e London to Kula lumpur return starting in Mar 09 the cost of an economy ticket with all the extras. approx £500. and then add on the kul to bkk return approx £100. I can not see many travellers to thailand using it. I am certain if Air Aaia had changed the routing i.e Lon to bkk . it would be more profitable ( forgetting about the latest troubles in Thailand) any coments

Sure. This is not Thai Air Asia it's Air Asia (mother company) based out of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. They have air rights for KUL (LCCT) to Stansted. Thai Air Asia does not and they have not applied nor do they have the aircraft to do so. This flight was not started for the BKK market but for Malaysia/Singapore.

So as far as fares go, if you can find a cheap add on to KUL and find the cheapest Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur to Stansted then it may be cheaper.

Do you happen to know whether the KL airport you fly in to from stansted is the same airport you fly out of to Bangkok?

there is only one airport in KL, so all connecting flights can be done within a short time.

at the beginning of pre-sale, a few weeks ago, the tickets were going for some £100 each way.

there are effectively 3 AirAsia's-which also shows up clearly on their website; the original Malay, Thai AA and then Indonesia.

KUL-where they have their own smaller LowCost Terminal away from the very good general one-offers a multitude of connections to smaller Indonesian and malay towns-avoiding the hel_l of Jakarta or so-for those who know that-and in these relations they come out very good (sometimes even better as the usual connection via SIN). Also -if planned before- a good and cheap connection on their both flights LSN-KUL-Australia. With the flurry of direct and connecting flights at mostly quite reasonable prices-from UK and Europe to BKK-they are neither aiming at nor really competetive for that market. But you could consider them for going direct to VTE/Laos or PnPn-Cambodia or so-bypassing BKK. NOone can expect an airline to only offer seats/prices that make a loss-that wont last long-as at least a dozen low-cost failed airlines in Europe have shown till now.

Er...

In fact there are two. But I almost consider it 3. KUL/LCCT and Subang. KUL is the main airport which is used by regular carriers. Air Asia and other low cost carriers use the LCCT which is about 15 minutes away from KUL but is considered the same airport as it's flights use the same runway. There is a shuttle bus to take you to the main terminal or the KL Express train to the city center.

Subang is nearer to the city. I used to fly in there many years ago. It's still used for charters and the such. It is kind of like Don Mueng in style and facilities and use.

Air Asia only uses LCCT in Kuala Lumpur.

Hi everybody!

After having searched on Air Asia web site for good deals on route LON-KUL and vv just concluded that they ARE not that cheap; unless they offer in the future better on line deals, the fact is that you may use "normal" non low cost airlines e.g. KLM, Emirates etc that are oferring good deals on this route for even lower fares & still get all the free extras i.e drinks, plastic food 6 luggage allowance which you have to pay for at Air Asia....

Nowadays the trick to finding good deals in just basically do an extensive search over the net and you will came to good deals on flights to Bangkok...example of this is my next trip to Thailand...bought a return tkt route Frankfurt/BKK with Emirates for € 448.00 (valid for two months, dates and flights may be changed at penalty € 100) and another connecting flight from London to Frankfurt with Lufthansa for £ 80.00 allowing me stright through connections....secret for this is obviously booking earlier so one will have more chances to getting seats on the lower classes in Economy.

As some have said, this is of limited interest to those of us in Thailand.

However, Stansted is better for me than the other airports so I pursued it. It also suited me to go to Phnom Penh beforehand, so I booked to a flight to KUL from there for about what it would have cost for a taxi from Pattaya to BKK.

The first problem is that I have to stay there overnight to catch the morning flight. I think it's the same problem if you come in from BKK. I thought initially I could use their sleeping facility (Plaza lounge?) but I'm in the LCCT terminal not the International one so I can't. I haven't solved that one yet as I don't run to the cost of the 2 big hotels nearby and I don't think it justifies the hassle of going into town. I'll probably wait and see what it's like when I get there.

For the KUL-LON flight I played around with dates to find the cheapest days and ended up going out on a Wednesday and back on a Friday.

The KUL-BKK flights over the w/e and Monday are about 6x what they fall to on Tuesday (though still very cheap money). I've never been to KL so I decided to stay over, the saving on air fare almost paying for the cost of 4 nights in TuneHotels (AirAsia's no frills hotel) not counting the cost of transport downtown. These are not significant costs but it seemed daft not to go and have a looksee.

The items haven't hit my Visa yet, but approx.

£450 return KUL-LON(STD) incl addons for meals and seat selection etc., 25kg luggage coming back and insurance.

£28 PNP-KUL

£38 KUL-BKK incl 25kg luggage and insurance.

£36 for 4 nights at TuneHotels downtown KL incl aircon (good eh?).

Certainly not everybody's idea of the perfect way to go back to UK, but for about £552 it suits me Sir - this time.

4 nights at TuneHotels downtown KL

The tune might wear a bit thin after a short while, very comfortable bed (in a shoebox) well located and cheap, I guess it depends what you're used to. For "quasi claustrophobics" like me, I'd dread coming "home" for some downtime each night.

Bloody good deal though, and as you've shown, it really pays to play on the AA search engine with your dates. I can feel an affordable side-trip to Amsterdam coming on, next trip North.

Errrrrr I have king size in big b'room all to myself at "home" so I know what you mean. We'll see.

I did wonder whether 4 nights there would be too long, but then I thought well it's so cheap I'm not that bothered if I just use it for 1/2 nights while I find somewhere better.

It's easier than trawling the net to prebook somewhere more expensive which I still might not like.

Have seen recent adverts of £199 one way St-KL

But I think I'll stick with Etihad offering £470 rtn to BKK, up to date films, a chance to stretch your legs and time for a coffee at AD, then straight into BKK.

Air Asia or Jet or whatever they call themselves need to do a max £400 return straight into BKK to interest me.
