wow - that's against merchant regulations and can cost them their merchant account :o

Are you going to pay that 'fine' ?

Really? I wasn't aware of that. I bought a Honda two years ago and used the Amex. I don't remember if I paid the 3%.

This time, I'm putting it on finance with wife, and only paying down payment about 200,000, so didn't really think about it. I haven't decided to buy the car yet.

Is it really against the law?

No, just against the normal AMEX-Dealer contract. But if he refuses the deal otherwise, what can u do?

But then as Aachen sez he does not HAVE to accept Amex on the car and it does cost the dealer about 3%. which on accessories would not be a problem but a car the % margins are less.

The dealer was throwing in everything except the white towel. Really, they include everything with the car; mats, tint, rear sensors, everything, except CD player, which is seems is outdated. They include a USB plug in and IPOD plug in. CDs are history.

As I understand it, your card issuer is liable to refund you any surcharge used. I do not know if this extends past credit cards to Amex. I have a feeling it does not (unless the Amex is a credit card).

This is true for both Visa and Mastercard. But not for AMEX. At least not in Australia. Or at least it was not the case in Australia a few years ago.

For Visa and Mastercard it is also against the rules to impose a minimum purchase amount on customers. But you see this all the time, here and in western countries.
